Yashasvi Jaiswal was dismissed by Asitha Fernando for 45 on Day 1 of the Colombo Test.

The heated exchange between Yashasvi Jaiswal and Sri Lankan pacer Asitha Fernando during the second Test in Colombo has continued to generate heat and discussion even off the field. What initially looked like a brief player confrontation has now turned into a wider debate about provocation, player responses and Jaiswal’s core combative nature.

After the incident took place on Day 1 of the Sri Lanka vs India second Test in Colombo, veteran commentator and cricket analyst Harsha Bhogle weighed in on the incident through a Cricbuzz video posted on Instagram.

He had questioned Jaiswal’s decision to turn back after initially starting to walk back towards the dugout. In response to Bhogle’s words, Jaiswal replied back, asking the veteran to get to know the complete exchange between the two players on the field.

Bhogle started the video by acknowledging that something appeared to have been said to Jaiswal as the Indian opener walked back after being dismissed by Asitha Fernando. He further claimed that the words used by the Lankan pacer might have been provocative.

However, he argued that Jaiswal’s best response would have been to simply continue towards the pavilion rather than returning to the pitch to end up in an ugly confrontation with the Sri Lankan pacer, only to be intervened and prevented by the Sri Lankan players.

According to Bhogle, while the initial comment may have been inappropriate, responding to it risked turning the situation into something bigger. He further described Jaiswal as a naturally combative personality and suggested that if the young Indian batter can keep a check on his temperament, then it will benefit him in the long run.

The incident marked Jaiswal’s dismissal for 45 runs after three consecutive boundaries in the same over against Asitha Fernando. As the pacer had the last laugh, he gave the Indian opener an animated send-off. This was followed by an ugly tiff between the two, and questions started being raised about whether Jaiswal crossed the line.

Yashasvi Jaiswal’s strong reply to Harsha Bhogle’s remarks on the clash

After Harsha Bhogle’s statement was released, Jaiswal did not agree with Bhogle on the context. He rather responded angrily to the Cricbuzz video and wrote:

“If you don’t know what he said then please don’t make your judgment. If anyone crosses the line we need to let them know this India will fight and reply.”

The response showed the rather combative side of Jaiswal that Bhogle had pointed out in the video. The youngster believes that the circumstances were such that it led him to the confrontation instead of just quietly walking away. He felt that he could not and should not be judged only by seeing the video footage.

His main area of concern seemed to be outsiders who do not have any idea of what Fernando said to him on the field and are still commenting on the clash without knowing the details. Jaiswal revealed that the players must know that this Indian team and its players will respond to any kind of confrontation.

Where does Yashasvi Jaiswal stand among WTC run-getters for India?
