Shubman Gill amassed 754 runs in five tests in England with four centuries.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh was pleased with the performance of his young protégé, Shubman Gill, in his first appearance as India’s test captain in the recent England series. After winning at Edgbaston and The Oval, India drew the five-test match 2-2.

After falling behind 1-2, the team also put up a strong fight to salvage a tie in the fourth test match at Manchester, preserving the series.

Yuvraj pointed out that Gill, who won the ICC Men’s Player of the Month award in July 2025, quashed scepticism about his hitting abroad and took the lead.

“There were a lot of question marks over his overseas record. The guy became the captain and scored four Test hundreds. It’s just unbelievable how you take responsibility when you’re given it,” Yuvraj said, speaking to ICC Digital on the sidelines of the ‘50 Days To Go’ Women’s Cricket World Cup event.

So, very proud of them. I certainly feel it’s a win for us, although it’s a drawn series, because it’s a young team. And it’s not easy to go and play well in England and prove yourself,” Yuvraj added.

In 10 innings, Gill amassed 754 runs at an average of 75.40, including twin hundreds (269 and 169 in the Edgbaston test). He became the second Indian captain, after Virat Kohli, to score a double century abroad and the first to do it in England. In an English test series, his total is also the highest by an Indian batsman and captain.

“Washington and Jadeja got hundreds”- Yuvraj Singh on the turning point for India in the England series

Additionally, he praised all-rounders Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar for their tenacious, long-term combination that helped save the Manchester yest.

“The moment in the tournament was when India drew the Test series. I’ve not seen in a very long time Washington and Jadeja get hundreds and draw a Test match. That speaks volumes. Obviously, Jadeja has been there for a long time. But I think Washington Sundar, as a youngster coming into the team, I think it was incredible to do what he did,” Yuvraj said.

Despite the absence of stalwarts Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, who had retired from test cricket days before the squad’s announcement, Yuvraj emphasised India’s perseverance.

“I think it’s just fantastic because I felt when you have a young team going to England, it’s a lot of pressure. You’re filling the boots of somebody like Virat Kohli or Rohit Sharma; it’s not easy. I think the guys took it head-on,” Yuvraj concluded.

The Indian team will now face the West Indies at home in their next test assignment in October.
