Zaheer Khan was associated with Mumbai Indians for quite some time in IPL.
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season is already starting to take shape, with teams making changes to their squads and coaching staff. The next edition of the tournament is expected to bring several changes after a busy IPL 2026 season.
Teams are also looking at their plans ahead of the IPL 2027 auction. With the new season still some time away, franchises have started making important decisions about their support staff.
Chennai Super Kings are one of the teams entering a new phase ahead of the next season. The five-time champions missed the playoffs in IPL 2026, continuing a run of three straight seasons without a playoff appearance.
For Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the biggest change comes in their coaching department. The franchise will begin a new chapter after ending its long association with Stephen Fleming.
CSK begin new era with Zaheer Khan

CSK have now named former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their head coach for IPL 2027. Zaheer will take over from Fleming, who served as CSK head coach from 2009 to 2026.
Zaheer Khan brings plenty of experience from his playing career as well as his work with IPL teams. He has previously worked with Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants in a coaching and support role.
The appointment marks a major change for CSK after Fleming’s long run with the franchise. During his time as head coach, Fleming guided CSK to five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 titles.
Zaheer will now be in charge of CSK’s coaching setup for IPL 2027. The franchise will look to build its plans around the former India fast bowler as it prepares for the upcoming season
Zaheer also has a strong record as a former India player. He played 92 Tests, 200 ODIs and 17 T20Is for India and was part of the team that won the 2011 ODI World Cup. He also took 102 wickets in 100 IPL matches during his playing career.
Zaheer said he is excited to become part of the CSK setup.
“It’s an honour to be a part of one of the most successful teams in the history of the IPL. As a cricketer, I have faced CSK on the field and have thoroughly enjoyed the contests. The atmosphere created by the Superfans at Chepauk makes it even more special. I can’t wait to join the legacy franchise with such a rich history.”
CSK CEO KS Viswanathan also welcomed the former India pacer to the franchise.
“Zaheer is a world-class bowler and has been a mentor to many young cricketers, especially fast bowlers, over the years. As a player, Zaheer was one of the key reasons for India’s success in the 2000s. He’s one of the finest cricketing brains, and we look forward to having him in our family.”
