Anush Agarwala is the first-ever Indian to compete in the dressage event.

Equestrian sports have always held a somewhat unique place in the Summer Olympics—again much because of the very nature of horse-and-rider teamwork that the sport defines. In the forthcoming Paris Olympics 2024, it will be the first time ever in this particular discipline of equestrian sports.

Indian athletes have participated in the eventing discipline in the earlier Olympics. Despite this, India is yet to win a medal in equestrian sports at the Summer Games. India’s campaign in this sport started as far back as 1980, with Jitendrajit Singh Ahluwalia, Hussain Singh, Mohammed Khan, and Dariya Singh being the pioneering riders.

A bit later, riders like Indrajit Lamba, who rode at Atlanta Olympics 1996, and Imtiaz Anees, who rode at Sydney Olympics 2000, kept the flag flying. In the last edition in Tokyo, Fouaad Mirza was the lone Indian representative. This time, young Anush Agarwalla will take the field against some of the world’s best riders.

Anush Agarwalla trains with none other than the former Olympian and gold medalist Hubertus Schmidt himself. The win, which sealed a bronze individually and a gold with his team in the Hangzhou Asian Games, will see Agarwalla make history at the Paris Olympics.
