The Gaurs began their campaign with a 2-1 victory over East Bengal.
After a gut-wrenching two-year wait, the Indian Super League (ISL) 2022-23 is all set to feature fan-filled stadiums. The League will follow the classic home and away fixtures format this season. Consequently, the league phase of ISL 2022-23 will run from October 7 to February 26, followed by the playoffs. The playoffs, semi-finals, and final will take place in March. FC Goa took on East Bengal in their first fixture of this season on October 12, where they secured a successful 2-1 victory.
The season will be running for almost five months and as they did last season, FC Goa will play a total of 20 matches each in the league phase – 10 matches at the Fatorda Stadium in Goa and the rest on away grounds.
This season will also see new changes to the playoff format with the organisers modifying it to include two more teams in the fight for the semi-final spots. In this format, the top six teams will secure automatic qualification for the knockouts. On the other hand, the top two teams at the end of the league stage will secure a direct berth to the semi-finals. Despite their lowly finish last time out, Carlos Pena’s return is bound to have some positives.
After a satisfactory transfer window that secured the likes of Alvaro Vazqeuz and Iker Guarrotxena, Pena will want his men to go all out. A frantic home crowd and the additional spots in the knockout stages are bound to go hand-in-hand as added incentives for the Spaniard’s side.
