Ratings: Goal fest from Mumbai City, Chennaiyin FC defence in pieces
(Courtesy : ISL Media)
The Islanders' Alberto Noguera scored the Indian Super League's 2000th goal in this game.
Mumbai City and Des Buckingham came to Chennai chasing their first win in the Marina Arena against Chennaiyin FC since the 2018-19 season. They got exactly that and more on a rainy night in the South Eastern coast. The Islanders blew Chennaiyin FC away with a ruthless display to complete an emphatic 2-6 scoreline on the night.
The home side started the night rather well. Petar Sliskovic, while being unmarked, headed home from point blank range to give them the lead. Just post the half-hour mark, Nasser El Khayati, who made his first start for Thomas Brdaric's side, doubled the lead. Everything was going smooth for the Marina Machans.
But as the heavens opened up with rains, so did Mumbai City. It was all them after El Khayati's goal as they rained in the goals past a hapless Debjit Majumder. Mumbai City cut the deficit just before half-time and put in a clinical performance in the second half to see off Thomas Brdaric's Chennaiyin FC. As a result, Des Buckingham's side move on to the second spot behind Hyderabad FC. Chennaiyin FC remain sixth-placed with four points from their first five games.
Here are the ratings of both teams from the goal-fest.
Chennaiyin FC (by Kaushik G Viswanath)
Debjit Majumder - 5.5
The Chennaiyin FC custodian endured a torrid time in goal facing 16 shots and making six saves. But he was also responsible for many errors including bringing Apuia down in the box, just before half-time, which led to a Mumbai City penalty.
Ajith Kumar - 6.5
The right-wing-back was erroneous at times but was one of the few bright sparks for Chennaiyin FC. He created two chances and completed 58% of his passes. Off the ball, he made three clearances and seven interceptions on the night. He was replaced for the final 10 minutes by Edwin Sydney Vanspaul.
Fallou Diagne - 6
The Chennaiyin FC defender started brightly but couldn't keep up with the attacking quality of Mumbai City. He won one tackle, made 10 clearances and four interceptions on the night. He also completed 83% of his passes and created one chance on the night.
Julius Duker - 5.5
The German struggled out of position and looked very flustered both on and off the ball. He completed 80% of his passes, won one tackle and made four clearances and two interceptions, respectively.
Aakash Sangwan - 6
The left-back did a decent job of keeping Chhangte quiet during phases of the game. But his efforts quickly evaporated with Mumbai's attacking quality shining through. Sangwan couldn't follow up his outstanding performance against East Bengal last week.
Sangwan had the most touches by a CFC player tonight (63). But could only complete 60% of his passes and attempted four crosses. He won one tackle, blocked two shots and made three clearances and one interception.
Jiteshwor Singh - 6
Jiteshwor put in a good shift tonight but couldn't hold out Mumbai City's quality for long. He completed only 68% of his passes and won four tackles. He also made four interceptions, one clearance and blocked one of Mumbai City's shots to save Chennaiyin FC from further embarrassment.
Prasanth Karuthadathkuni - 5
Like Jiteshwor, Prasanth too started brightly and caused problems to Mumbai on the right. But he couldn't sustain his impact on the ball and attempted only 19 passes in his time on the pitch. He completed only 67% of his passes and didn't offer anything on the defensive front for Brdaric's men. Prasanth was duly taken off just past the hour mark for Vincy Barretto.
Nasser El Khayati - 6
Making his full debut for Chennaiyin FC, El Khayati showed his range of qualities and scored Chennaiyin FC's second of the game. But the second half was a lull for the Dutchman. He had to watch on as his side conceded one goal after another. El Khayati completed 76% of his passes and made one interception on the night along with his goal. He was taken off in the 74th minute.
Anirudh Thapa - 6
Anirudh Thapa cut a frustrated figure when seeing his side drop their guard after taking a 2-0 lead. He continued having that while seeing his side go into a freefall. He did his best with a shot on target and 87% pass completion. Thapa also made one clearance and interception respectively. You know it has not been a good day when your side's skipper is taken off. That is what happened with Thapa who was taken off in the 74th minute.
Petar Sliskovic - 6
Petar Sliskovic scored the opener against Mumbai City and looked threatening in the first 30 minutes for Chennaiyin FC. But that was as good as it got from the German. He only took one more shot in the remainder of the game which was off target.
Sliskovic also had only 23 touches and attempted 14 passes throughout the game with 79% accuracy. He also won one tackle and made one interception on the night.
Rahim Ali - 5
Rahim Ali started as a strike partner to Petar Sliskovic but very soon ended up taking positions behind rather than drive forward on goal. He contributed to the side by assisting the second goal to Nasser El Khayati. Otherwise, Rahim didn't have a substantial contribution in the game. He completed only eight passes with an accuracy of 67% and was hooked off post the hour mark for Sajid Dhot.
Substitutes
Mohammad Sajid Dhot - 6
The defender came on post the hour mark and could not do much to stem the flow of goals. He won both his tackles and completed 83% of his passes.
Vincy Barretto - 5.5
Barretto replaced Prasanth to add more pace on the wings. He did a decent job by creating one chance and completing 71% of his passes. He did not have anything to contribute on the defensive front. The winger also attempted one shot which was way off target.
Jobby Justin - 5
Coming on for the final 16 minutes, Jobby Justin had his only attempted shot on target. But otherwise, he was nowhere to be seen than on two other occasions where he completed his attempted passes.
Syed Suhail Pasha - 5.5
The youngster came on along with Jobby Justin and completed only 43% of his passes. He also won both his attempted tackles.
Edwin Sydney Vanspaul - N/A
Edwin came on for the final 10 minutes and didn't have much to do apart from one interception and completing 54% of his 13 attempted passes.

Greg Stewart - 8.5
The Scotsman was once again in top form today. He made his presence evident throughout the match. Stewart converted a crucial penalty in the additional minutes of the first half. He assisted a goal for Pereyra Diaz and glanced two shots and registered 66 touches in the game.
Lallianzuala Chhangte - 7.5
Chhangte performed his duties well in the match. He got the job done nice and clean and maintained an 89% passing accuracy.
Bipin Singh - 9
A dazzling presence in the wing, Bipin created a severe headache for the opposition defence throughout the 90 minutes. He scored one goal and assisted two for the team. He registered four shots in the game.
Jorge Pereyra Diaz - 7.5
It was a well-versed performance by the Argentine. He converted a cross into the box through a header past the goalkeeper in the 33rd minute. He had two shots on target before getting substituted in the 62nd minute.
