Cristiano Ronaldo becomes first male footballer to score at five World Cup editions
The Portuguese superstar has reached yet another incredible milestone
Manchester United said on Tuesday that the 37-year-old player would leave the team immediately. Last week, Ronaldo gave a controversial interview to Piers Morgan in which he criticised the club's facilities, said the Glazers didn't care about the club and said he didn't respect Erik ten Hag. Even though Ronaldo said he wanted to leave the club last summer, the Dutchman decided to keep him. The Portuguese star is currently focusing on the National team and will look for a club in January.
Cristiano Ronaldo will play for Portugal at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which will likely be his last chance to win the tournament. The trophy is the only thing missing from Ronaldo's otherwise impressive resume. When he captains the national team at the tournament, he will try to overcome the disappointment of leaving Manchester United.
But now that Ronaldo's World Cup career is ending, how many goals has he scored on the grandest stage of all? Find out how many goals Ronaldo has scored for Portugal in the World Cup.
How often does Ronaldo score for Portugal at the World Cup?
In his four World Cups, Ronaldo has scored seven goals. In 2006, he scored his first goal in only his second World Cup game. He scored a penalty kick in the 80th minute to help Portugal beat Iran 2-0 in the group stages. Ronaldo scored the goal at the age of 21 years and 132 days, making him the youngest Portuguese player to score in a World Cup game.
In 2010, the five-time winner of the Ballon d'Or scored the only goal in a 7-0 win over North Korea.
Four years later, Ronaldo went into the 2014 World Cup with an injury. He only scored once, a late goal against Ghana that won the game, but it wasn't enough to keep Portugal from being eliminated in the group stage.
Ronaldo had his most successful World Cup in Russia in 2018. He scored a hat trick in a 3-3 tie with Spain and then scored the game-winning goal in a 1-0 win over Morocco. With his goal against Ghana at the FIFA World Cup 2022, Ronaldo is the first player to score in five World Cups
Since his first game for Portugal in 2003, Ronaldo has scored 117 goals in all competitions. This makes him the player with the most goals for Portugal. He also has the record for the most scored goals in international soccer, beating the previous record of 109 by Iranian striker Ali Daei.
