Many fans will not believe that Hoffenheim were once a gymnastics club founded in 1899. But the club was initially established in 1945 and later became a football club after receiving financial backing. They started competing in the big leagues, the club first appeared in the fifth division, and with their tremendous improvement, they reached the top flight of the German league. Since then, they have faced numerous big clubs and have been able to maintain their Bundesliga status to this day.
Their rivalry with RB Leipzig grew later in 2019, as Leipzig were founded in 2009. They advanced from the NOFV-Oberliga Süd (V) to the Bundesliga in the 2016-17 season, and they have also reached the Champions League semi-finals in 2019-20. They recently defeated reigning Champions League winners Real Madrid.
