LaLiga is the top-tier football league of Spanish Football. The Liga Nacional de Futbol Profesional oversees the competition, which features 20 teams. The league matches pose a difficult challenge for most clubs and a minor defeat or a shock upset is part and parcel of the tournament. These unexpected results also make it the spectacle it is. However, some clubs have managed to avoid defeat in the league for long periods. Let's look at five clubs with the longest unbeaten streaks in LaLiga History.
5. Real Madrid - 29 Games
Real Madrid are not only one of the biggest clubs in Spain but it is one of the biggest clubs in the world of Football. Madrid was unbeaten in the first 24 games of the 1996-97 season and carried four wins and a draw from the previous season to make it 29 games unbeaten. Their unbeaten run finally came to an end in their 30th La Liga game against Rayo Vallecano. Even though their winning streak came to an end they were able to win the La Liga title by beating their arch-rivals Barcelona.
4. Real Madrid - 31 Games
Before having the 29-game unbeaten streak the Los Blancos previously had a winning streak of 31 games in the 1988-1989 season. Los Blancos came close to breaking this record when they went 29 games unbeaten in 1996-97. This is still the longest unbeaten run in La Liga by Real Madrid. A legendary team that won five consecutive league titles between 1986 and 1990.
3. Barcelona - 31 Games
Barcelona under Pep Guardiola is still considered to be one of the best teams in the history of football. In the second game of the 2010-11 season, Barcelona was defeated 2-0 by Hercules at Camp Nou. After all, that defeat was followed by a 31-game winning streak, which also includes a 5-0 victory over arch-rivals Real Madrid under Jose Mourinho on Camp Nou. They won a third consecutive league title, Guardiola's team had won 27 games and drawn in the league.
2. Real Sociedad - 38 Games
Real Sociedad began their unbeaten streak in the 1978-79 season with six games. They kept their winning streak going for another 32 games the next season. It was a pity that they were not able to win the league title as they had a high number of draws and finally their streak came to an end in their 33rd game, They had played a total of 16 draws in the league, as Real Madrid was crowned the league champions that season.
1. Barcelona - 42 games
The Catalans under Ernesto Valverde had an unbeaten streak of 42 games in the 2017-2018 season which finally came to an end against Real Betis which they lost 4-3 in the last league game of the season. The unbeaten streak began with Luis Enrique as the coach, who led the side to 14 victories and three draws in the league until Ernesto Valverde took over. They have crowned champions of the league and were 14 points clear of 2nd-placed Atletico Madrid.
