Ratings: Mauricio brace for Odisha FC sinks East Bengal's ship in ISL 2022-23
The Kalinga Warriors won comfortably after trailing early in the match.
Odisha FC defeated East Bengal FC by 3-1 in their latest Indian Super League ISL 2022-23 fixture at the Kalinga Stadium, Bhubaneswar on Saturday. Despite an early goal by Cleiton Silva, the hosts mounted a comeback to win the three points and send the visitors empty-handed.
The match had plenty of individual errors, particularly from the East Bengal FC defence. This led to Diego Mauricio scoring a brace with the other goal coming from Nandhakumar Sekar’s cross.
Here is a look at the player ratings from both OFC and EBFC from their ISL 2022-23 clash:
Odisha FC (By Uttiyo Sarkar)
Amrinder Singh – 6.0
Amrinder made a poor error for the first, needlessly coming out of his goal and allowing Cleiton to chip over him. Better after that, making six saves.
Narender Gahlot – 7.0
Gahlot kept a tight mark on the dangerous Naorem Mahesh Singh, neutralizing a big threat for the visitors. Made two blocks and nonstop with his movement on the right.
Carlos Delgado – 6.5
Delgado maintained a pretty solid defensive line after the early opener and kept Cleiton at bay too. Made three interceptions and a block in a solid outing.
Osama Malik – 5.0
Lost the mark of Cleiton for his goal and didn’t seem really sharp during the game. Couldn’t complete 90 minutes in the ISL game.
Denechandra Meitei – 6.5
Denechandra was a hard-working figure on the left, helping on both sides. Created two chances and put in sturdy defensive work with three tackles and four blocks.
Saul Crespo – 7.0
The Spaniard was involved in a lot of good stuff, helping move the ball swiftly and also disrupting East Bengal’s attacks. Completed the most passes (58) as well as making two tackles and two interceptions.
Raynier Fernandes – 8.5
Raynier operated at a different level than all the midfielders on show. Sent in a great corner for Mauricio’s first and then a perfect through ball to assist his second. Created four chances in a very impressive showing.
Thoiba Singh – 6.5
The young midfielder was like a bulldog in midfield. He pressed the opposition players strictly and got into key defensive areas to avert danger, making five blocks and two tackles.
Jerry Mawihmingthanga – 5.5
Despite being a threat with his fizzy movement, Jerry failed to really create anything prolific. Tested the goalkeeper late on with a cheeky effort.
Nandhakumar Sekar – 7.0
Quite fortunate for his goal, as the attempted cross took a wicked deflection into the goal. Created problems with his movement.
Diego Mauricio – 9.0
Mauricio was a nightmare for the visitors’ backline. His movement and physicality troubled the visitors, with the striker bringing his clinical boots to the show. Scored a powerful header for the first before waltzing past Ivan Gonzalez for his second. Taken off as he was on a hat trick and looked angry about being replaced.
Substitutes
Victor Rodriguez – 6.0
Added more energy and creativity after coming on. Created one decent chance late on.
Isaac Chhakchhuak – 6.0
Caused some trouble on counter-attacks, but most involved in defensive work.
Pedro Martin – N/R
The Spaniard hardly got involved in the game after coming on.
East Bengal FC (by Waseem Zaidi)
Suvam Sen (GK) - 4.5
Suvam Sen did not have an enjoyable evening. The ISL custodian could have done better in all three goals that the team conceded. He made three saves but would be disappointed with his performance.
Ankit Mukherjee - 6.5
The full-back had a perfectly legal goal disallowed by the linesman. His frustration then led to him committing a bad foul earning him a yellow card. His long throws were a threat.
Ivan Gonzalez - 6.0
Ivan Gonzalez led the defensive line well but made a key error which led to the third goal of the game for Odisha FC against East Bengal. The centre-back otherwise kept a close watch on the opposition forwards.
Lalchungnunga - 5.5
The centre-back made three clearances in the game. However, a blot on his performance would be getting overpowered by Mauricio leading to OFC’s first goal of the match.
Jerry Lalrinzuala - 5.0
Jerry Lalrinzuala’s performance can be best described as lukewarm. Nothing notable from it apart from two successful tackles and a clearance to deny OFC an extra goal. His marking on the far post was occasionally poor.
Alex Lima - 7.5
Alex Lima provided an impressive assist for Cleiton Silva’s goal by feeding the striker with a penetrative through ball. He created three scoring chances for his team but seeing the chances go to waste was demoralising for the Brazilian. He attempted 10 tackles but got only two of them right in the ISL game.
Mobashir Rahman - 4.5
Mobashir Rahman played 46 minutes and did not have any meaningful contribution. He was mostly a lost figure in the midfield with only 16 touches of the ball.
Jordan O'Doherty - 6.5
Jordan O’Doherty was impressive but could not affect the game as he would have liked. He had one shot on target and completed 18 of his 21 passes with an 86% success rate. Unfortunately, he did not get the ideal support in midfield and cut an isolated figure at times.
Himanshu Jangra - 4.5
Himanshu Jangra played only 41 minutes of the game and had 14 touches of the ball. He was taken off on a stretcher after getting injured and could not take a single shot on goal during his time on the pitch.
Cleiton Silva - 7.5
Cleiton Silva scored the opening goal of the ISL game with a delightful chip over the goalkeeper. He also created two chances for his team that were not converted. His hold-up play and movement were threatening but EBFC could not provide him with support.
Naorem Singh - 6.0
Naorem Singh could not create a scoring chance or take a shot on goal but he was positive whenever in possession of the ball. He showed promise and willingness to combine with fellow attackers in the final third.
Substitutions
Sumeet Passi - 6.0
Sumeet Passi was brought on to help the team mount a comeback in the match. The striker had a header saved by Amrinder Singh from close-range.
Aniket Jadhav - 6.5
Aniket Jadhav replaced the injured Himanshu in the first half. He showed promise with his dribbling and tried to create scoring opportunities for his teammates. Inside 49 minutes, Jadhav had 34 touches of the ball and created three scoring chances.
Charis Kyriakou - 5.5
The midfielder picked up a yellow card after coming on from the bench. He aired a shot into the stands and overall had a disappointing cameo.
Thongkhosiem Haokip - 6.5
The forward made an instant impact by creating a scoring chance after coming on as a substitute. He also had a shot on target for Odisha FC but could not help East Bengal come back into the match.
Mohamad Rakip - 5.5
Mohamad Rakip had 11 touches of the ball from a nine-minute cameo that did not have any meaningful contribution.
