The Blue Tigresses must navigate through three rounds of qualifiers to make it into the final tournament in France.
The draw for the Round 1 of the Asian qualifiers for the football tournament at the Paris 2024 Olympic games took place on 12 January 2023. Indian women’s football team will kick off its qualifying campaign for the Summer Olympics in Group G. Central Asian countries Kyrgyz Republic and Turkmenistan will be joining the Indian women’s team in the group.
The matches will begin from April 2023 onwards. Expectedly, post the completion of Round 1, the Round 2 of the qualifiers will take place later in the year 2023. Both nations apart from India are debutants in the qualifying campaign for the women’s football tournament at the Olympics.
A difficult task
Despite the Indian women's football team being the favourite to qualify from Group G, it will be difficult nonetheless. Kyrgyz Republic and Turkmenistan are strong footballing nations with a decent structure. Despite their inexperience in women’s football, they can spring up a surprise.
Only one qualification spot is available in Group G which consists of three teams. The top team will move into the second round of the qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. In the end, two nations from Asia will qualify for the final tournament in Paris, which will have teams from all over the world vying for the medals.
India were the host of the Women’s Asian Cup in 2022 and the country needs to establish itself as a top nation in women’s football in the continent. The upcoming Asian leg of the qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympics is a perfect opportunity for women footballers to prove their critics wrong. This is their fifth Olympic qualifying campaign and they would aim to better last time’s performance, where they reached Round 2 of the qualifiers.
