The French goalkeeper has announced his retirement from international football

Hugo Lloris, 36, has declared his retirement from international football. The Tottenham goalkeeper played 145 games for France, winning the World Cup in Russia and the Nations League in 2021.

His retirement comes after France's World Cup final loss to Argentina in penalties shootout in 2022. For 14 years, the stopper was a member of France's squad, which won two national titles.

Lloris' dedication to the national team led to his appointment as captain of France in 2012, and the squad went on to win the FIFA World Cup 2018 in Moscow, defeating Croatia 4-2. He then helped France win the Nations League in 2021 by beating Spain 2-1.

All of these amazing experiences, however, were followed by difficult times, as France reached its first-ever major international tournament of the European Championship in 2016, only to be defeated 0-1 by Portugal, and then back-to-back World Cup finals in 2022, which also concluded in disappointment as they were defeated on penalties by Argentina.

But he had a pleasant illustrious career with France. Lloris addressed L'Equipe after announcing his retirement. “I don’t want to make it own, I have always said and repeated that the France team doesn’t belong to anyone, and we wall have to make sure that’s the case, me first. I think that behind the team is ready to continue, there is also a goalkeeper who is ready. “

“there comes time when you know how pass the hand.”

France’s one of the finest stoppers

Lloris made his France debut in 2008, and he quickly cemented himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the country after receiving widespread praise from the media and fans for his outstanding performance against the Republic of Ireland in a World Cup qualifier, which earned France a place in the 2010 World Cup.

Within two years, he was given the captaincy, and by the 2018 World Cup, Lloris had made 88 appearances for France, making him the only goalkeeper with the most caps for the national team.

Despite failing to win the 2022 World Cup, Lloris surpassed a few records, becoming the player with the most caps in France's history (145), and with France reaching the final of the FIFA World Cup 2022, he became the goalkeeper with the most World Cup appearances (20) .

Lloris truly closed his international career on a brighter note, as evidenced by his national team honours.
