Lionel Scaloni (Argentina), Didier Deschamps (France), Walid Regragui (Morocco), Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) and Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid) have all been shortlisted for the Best Coach award this year.
Favourites to win the award are -
3. Pep Guardiola (Manchester City)
The Manchester City manager has been shortlisted for this award, thanks to his Premier League-winning season. He has been phenomenal domestically with Manchester City and has completely transformed the club both awards-wise and structure-wise. Manchester City under him has won four Premier League titles since his joining in 2016.
During his tenure, their arch-rival Manchester United has never managed to finish above Manchester City in the points table. The Spanish man has won major titles in Spain, Germany, and England. Although dominating domestically, Pep has failed to win major European titles like the Champions League with Manchester City. They reached the final of the Champions League in 2021 but were defeated by their English counterpart Chelsea.
2. Carlo Ancelotti (Real Madrid)
The Italian is the only manager to have won the Champions League, a record, four times. He has won all five major league titles- Serie A, Premier League, La Liga, Ligue 1, and Bundesliga. He is one of the most decorated football managers ever and thus one of the greatest ever. Himself a Champions League winner as a player, and his European record as mentioned is just phenomenal.
Carlo Ancelotti is currently managing the Spanish giants Real Madrid. This is his second stint as the Los Blancos manager, and it is going great. Last season, he won La Liga and the Champions League and thus is nominated for the FIFA Best Men's Coach Award 2022. Under him, the club is building a new team which includes players such as Vinicius, Militao, Rodrygo etc.
With the old Zidane players like Modric, Kroos and Benzema nearing retirement, the club is focusing on youngsters to maintain their legacy. Carlo Ancelotti is one of the favourites to win this award. Recently he also won the IFFHS Best Club Coach of the year award.
1. Lionel Scaloni (Argentina National Team)
Lionel Scaloni was first chosen as an interim coach but later his job was turned permanent. This decision permanently changed Argentine Football as it led them to a Copa America and a World Cup triumph. The Copa America win was their first major international title in 28 years and the first for Lionel Messi.
Argentina also won the 2022 World Cup in Qatar beating France in a thrilling final on penalties. The World Cup win was their first since their Diego Maradona-led triumph in the 1986 Mexico World Cup. Argentina under him also won the Finalissima 2022, a trophy between the European and South American champions.
It is not only the trophies that are the most impressive fact about Scaloni but the way he transformed the team into a monster. Lionel Scaloni led Argentina to a 36-game unbeaten run which is a national record which means they were unbeaten since July 2019. Their run came to an end at the hand of Saudi Arabia in their opening match of the World Cup. He was crowned the best national team coach by IFFHS this year. The World Cup win makes him the favourite to win the FIFA Best coach award.
