Chelsea are closing in on a record deal for World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez

Chelsea are said to be in talks to acquire Argentine World Cup winner Enzo Fernandez, who has already agreed to join the Premier League team. However, the London club appear to be hesitant to pay the player's required release clause of 120 million euros.

According to rumours, the player wants the move but is waiting for the clubs. The final transfer fee for Fernandez is yet to be determined as discussions between the clubs are ongoing. The Argentine midfielder is highly coveted and Chelsea might face competition from other potential suitors if they don’t secure his signatures in the next few days.

The Benfica midfielder was absolutely sensational at the FIFA World Cup 2022, he showcased his class and guided the South American nation to glory. Chelsea supporters eagerly await the outcome of the deal and the potential addition of Fernandez to the squad, whose skills would undoubtedly be a valuable asset on the pitch.

If Chelsea manages to get this deal done & dusted, here are three ways Chelsea can line up with Enzo Fernandez:

5-2-3 (LCM: Enzo Fernande, RCM: Jorginho/Kovacic)

Enzo Fernandez is at his best when he is allowed to be the box-to-box midfielder. It comes naturally to him and he might be a great fit in the 5-2-3 or any system which has two CM’s.

In the World Cup with Argentina and during his time at Benfica this season, he has often played in the 4-4-2. A system where Fernandez was one-half of the midfield. He was forced to take on a lot of responsibility and he delivered time and again. The Benfica midfielder is capable enough to defend when needed and join the attack to support the forwards. Potter is a fan of having 2 midfielders in the center of the park and the arrival of Fernandez could be the missing piece.

4-3-3 (Attack) (LCM: Enzo Fernandez RCM: Jorginho/Kovacic CAM: Mount)

Enzo could also do wonders for Chelsea in a 4-3-3 attacking setup. In this setup, he would be a part of a two-man midfield behind the creative midfielder. Enzo is a young midfielder who has shown that he is capable to be a complete package.

A man who can defend as well as contribute towards attack. In the absence of Kante, Enzo could pair up with Jorginho or Kovacic behind CAM (Mount). Replacing Kante is next to impossible but Enzo can prove to be a huge investment for the future. He can solve a few major issues existing in the Chelsea setup.

4-3-3 (Holding) (CDM: Enzo Fernandez CM’s: Kovacic/Jorginho & Mount)

While Enzo loves to play as a CM (box-to-box midfielder), he is versatile enough to be the DM behind Mount and Kovacic. In this system, he can replace Jorginho and allow Potter to be a touch more aggressive.

While it is unlikely that Jorginho plays in front of Enzo but it is something that Potter can test. It will allow him a lot of control in the middle of the park. Chelsea have been found wandering in midfield at times this season and Enzo can surely help them with that. Chelsea fans desperately want some spark in the center of the park and the young Benfica player can be the one.

In short, signing Enzo Fernandez could solve quite a few issues at Chelsea. Graham Potter is in need of a few signings and he will surely love to have Enzo in his squad. The young Argentine is a great asset to have because of his versatility. It will be interesting to see if and when Chelsea get the deal done and dusted.
