The match's fate was decided through a late goal.

A late goal by substitute Sajal Bag helped Chennaiyin FC defeat NorthEast United FC 4-3 at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Friday in an essential dead rubber ISL 2022-23 contest. Having squandered their playoff qualification chances earlier, both teams gave it their all in this absolute goal-fest. The Highlanders demonstrated terrific enthusiasm as they kept coming back into the game until the home side sealed the fate with the aforementioned late strike.

Here are the player ratings from this match.

Chennaiyin FC (By M Sudharshan)

Samik Mitra - 6.0

Made two saves and had a below-average game, conceding three goals.

Edwin Sydney Vanspaul - 6.5

Played well in the right-back position. Could have scored a goal having two shots on target.

Fallo Diagne - 6.5

Substituted in the 82nd minute due to an injury. Fallou made two interceptions and had two shots off target.

Vafa Hakhamaneshi - 6.0

Vafa made three interceptions and one clearance. Should have been more proactive after the substitution of Fallou.

Aakash Sangwan - 6.5

Made four tackles and two interceptions. Akash had a passing accuracy of 85 per cent.

Anirudh Thapa - 7.0

Scored a goal which was also his second goal this season. Was more active in the final third, making good runs.

Julius Duker - 7.5

Assisted Rahim Ali in the opening goal with a through ball. Made 53 passes and had a pass accuracy of 94 per cent.

Jiteshwor Singh - 6.5

Jiteshwor Singh was more active in the defence, making two interceptions and one tackle.

Rahim Ali - 7.0

Scored the opening goal for Chennaiyin FC in the third minute, making a brilliant run. Had two shots on target.

Kwame Karikari - 7.0

Had two shots on target. Scored a goal in the second half.

Vincy Baretto - 6.5

He was substituted in the 31st minute due to an injury. Vincy as usual, was electric making his presence felt both in attack and defence.

Substitutes

Ninthoi Meetei - 6.5

Ninthoi was brought in early in the game. Made few good runs but couldn't convert them into goals.

Sajal Bag - 7.0

Scored the winning goal.

Nasser El Khayati - 6.5

Made a valuable assist, resulting in a winning goal. Made his presence felt in the limited time offered.

Jockson Dhas - N/A

Gurmukh Singh (N/A)

NorthEast United (By Tarkesh Jha)

Arindam Bhattacharya – 5

The goalkeeper was called upon action frequently and he responded well by making five saves but also conceded four goals in a disappointing defensive outing for the visitors.

Joe Zoherliana – 5

Joe attempted three tackles, intercepted once, created a solitary goal-scoring chance and maintained an 80 per cent passing accuracy.

Mashoor Shereef – 5

Mashoor recorded four interceptions, but could have done better to hold the backline together to save the home team’s onslaught of goals.

Aaron Evans – 5.5

Evans tackled, intercepted and cleared the ball twice each in addition to completing 89 per cent of his passes. However, NorthEast United’s entire defensive structure was taken to the cleaners for the better part of the game.

Hira Mondal – 4.5

Mondal recorded an interception and clearance each but could have arguably been more assertive and assured in possession.

Joseba Beitia – 5.5

The midfielder completed 90 per cent of his passes, attempted four tackles, intercepted twice and created two goal-scoring opportunities as well. However, the entire NorthEast United midfield was run over multiple times and the Spaniard should have done better to screen the backline on those instances.

Mohamed Irshad – 5

Irshad tackled once, cleared the ball twice and often endeavoured to push the ball forward as the Highlanders chased the game early on in the second half.

Gani Nigam – 5.5

Nigam created two goal-scoring chances, assisted once and played an instrumental role in the attacking show that the visitors put up, irrespective of the defeat.

Parthib Gogoi – 7

Gogoi rounded off the breakthrough season with a goal and an assist each to help NorthEast United level the proceedings on multiple occasions. The 20-year-old will surely take away positive memories from an otherwise disappointing season for the Highlanders.

Wilmar Jordan Gil – 7.5

The forward bagged a brace as he took five shots and caused consistent trouble in the Chennaiyin FC half with his sharp movements and precision inside the 18-yard box.

Jithin MS – 5.5

Jithin took a shot on target, created one goal-scoring chance but couldn’t really make an impact like Gogoi or Gil in the game.

Substitutes

Emil Benny – 6

Benny made an immediate impact, securing an assist and adding some fresh zeal and creativity in NorthEast’s attacking moves.

Tondonba Singh – 5

Tondonba was brought on to solidify the backline and avoid any late hiccups but the team couldn’t save a late goal from going in the injury time.

Laldanmawia Ralte – N/A
