East Bengal players dominate the ISL 2022-23 Team of The Week for GW21

The past week saw plenty of surprising results in the league as the qualified teams tested out their bench strength.

ISL 2022-23 league stage is about to end. The second last game week of the season took place recently, giving the fans many unpredictable results. Giants such as Hyderabad FC and Mumbai City FC were on the receiving end of defeats while outfits like ATK Mohun Bagan and Odisha FC recorded essential wins.

The race for the playoff qualification kept the fans on the edge of their seats. Every game in the past week saw plenty of noteworthy individual performances. Foreign players and domestic players banded together to deliver for their respective teams.

Here is Khel Now’s Team of the Week for game week 21 of the Indian Super League 2022-23:

Formation - 4-2-3-1

Goalkeeper - Kamaljit Singh (EBFC)

Kamaljit Singh was superb for East Bengal FC in goal. He made five saves to help East Bengal FC upset Mumbai City FC by a 1-0 scoreline. He also made five catches and two clearances in a wonderful performance.

Right-back - Sarthak Golui (EBFC)

East Bengal FC's defence frustrated Mumbai City FC and handed them a defeat when the outfit was to lift the ISL League Winner’s Shield. Sarthak Golui was one of the reasons why the Islanders were not able to score a goal. He made four clearances, three interceptions and made six tackles.

Centre-back - Lalchungnunga (EBFC)

Lalchungnunga was another brilliant performer in East Bengal FC’s defence against Mumbai City FC. The defender made six clearances and attempted nine tackles during the game. His contribution was in immense towards the clean sheet.

Centre-back - Pratik Chaudhari (JFC)

Pratik Chaudhari was sensational for Jamshedpur FC against Hyderabad FC. He had to take the lead in defence after Eli Sabia’s direct red card. The centre-back made eight clearances and four interceptions to help his team the match.

Left-back - Subhasish Bose (ATKMB)

Subhasish Bose was excellent for ATK Mohun Bagan in their crucial 2-1 win over Kerala Blasters FC. He created two scoring chances for his team and had 74 touches on the ball, playing an important role in the build-up.

Central Midfielder - Saul Crespo (OFC)

Saul Crespo has been a consistent performer for Odisha FC this season. The midfielder won the ISL 2022-23 Hero of the Match award for his performance in a 3-1 win over NorthEast United FC. He finished the game with two assists, four clearances and four blocks.

Central Midfielder - Carl McHugh (ATKMB)

Carl McHugh was crucial to ATK Mohun Bagan. He won the ISL2022-23 Hero of the Match award after scoring a brace in the 2-1 win over Kerala Blasters FC. The Mariners will hope that the midfielder can retain the form in the playoffs.

Right winger - Nandhakumar Sekar (OFC)

Nandhakumar Sekar was on target for Odisha FC against NorthEast United FC. He scored the opening goal of the game with a sensational long-range strike. His goal kept OFC in the hunt for playoff qualification with a 3-1 win over the Highlanders.

Left winger - Naorem Mahesh Singh (EBFC)

Naorem Singh was the difference-maker in East Bengal FC’s 1-0 win over Mumbai City FC. He scored thanks to a sensational shot past the goalkeeper and was a constant threat during the game. He also won the ISL 2022-23 Hero of the Match award.

Central Attacking Midfielder - Harry Sawyer (JFC)

Harry Sawyer was the Hero of the Match in Jamshedpur FC’s 3-2 win against Hyderabad FC. The attacker was at the centre of everything the Men of Steel did in the attacking third against the Nizams. He made two assists and took six attempts on goal. 

Striker - Kwame Karikari (CFC)

Kwame Karikari dealt a huge blow to FC Goa’s hopes for ISL playoffs qualification. He scored a brace in Chennaiyin FC’s 2-1 win over the Gaurs away from home. He won the Hero of the Match award and deserved it as well.
