Sunil Chhetri and Javi Hernandez scored in the second half of the game.

Bengaluru FC put an end to Mumbai City FC’s unbeaten run in the ongoing Indian Super League (ISL) campaign by inflicting a 2-1 defeat upon the Islanders at the Kanteerava Stadium on Wednesday. The Blues scored twice within 14 minutes in the second half through Sunil Chhetri and Javi Hernandez but the visitors managed to strike back as Mourtada Fall netted in the 77th minute.

Bengaluru looked to be the most fitting opponent to halt Mumbai City’s victorious run basis their current form and the result that transpired eventually substantiated the same. Here are the player ratings for both the teams involved in the game.

Bengaluru FC (By Sathvik Bharadwaj)

Gurpreet Singh Sandhu - 8

Made a big save one-on-one to deny Bipin. Made five saves from six shots on target.

Prabir Das - 8

Started off very brightly down the right, using pace and trickery to make good runs and handled Bipin well.

Sandesh Jhingan - 7.5

Was hassled by Diaz’s pace, but won his aerial duels comprehensively. Made 9 clearances.

Aleksandar Jovanovic - 9

Launched long passes from the base of defence and was comfortable on the ball. Created the second goal with a purposeful run from the defensive half and cutting back to Javi. Made 3 successful tackles.

Naorem Roshan Singh - 8

Chipped several well-directed crosses into the box, played mainly as an inverted wing-back and occupied spaces high up the left.

Bruno Ramires - 7.5

Played in a deeper defensive position. Miscued a header from Javi's cross, but was a solid presence at the back, dealing with crosses.

Rohit Kumar - 8.5

Combined well with Roshan down the left, growing in confidence with every minute he plays. 3/3 successful tackles and 93% passing accuracy show his growing influence on the team.

Suresh Wangjam - 7.5

Was full of action in midfield, be it tackling, marking or passing. Filled in smartly for players out of position. Made 2 interceptions.

Javi Hernandez - 9

Another quintessential performance in midfield from the Spaniard. Created the opening goal and slotted away the second. 2 successful interceptions, the most completed passes and created 4 chances. Pure quality.

Sivasakthi Narayanan - 7

Hurried the Mumbai defenders on the ball with his quick sprinting. Came off for Pablo Perez.

Sunil Chhetri (c) - 8.5

Tested Lachenpa early with a long-range effort on target, and stole the ball off Mumbai players’ toes with his tenaciousness. Scored a quality header off Javi’s corner to give BFC the lead.

Substitutes

Pablo Perez - N/A

Was always on the lookout for passes forwards.

Udanta Singh - N/A

Had an opportunity to score immediately after coming on, touch let him down.

Mumbai City FC (By Tarkesh Jha)

Phurba Lachenpa – 5

Mumbai City's goalkeeper Lachenpa saved a couple of shots, and punched once but was left hapless in the two goals that Bengaluru put past him.

Sanjeev Stalin – 6

Stalin tackled, intercepted and cleared the ball once and also completed 91 per cent of his passes to round off a decent defensive performance.

Mourtada Fall – 5

Fall made four clearances, three blocks, one tackle and interception each but could have commanded the backline well in the particular phase of the second half wherein Mumbai seemed to have lost control over the proceedings.

Mehtab Singh – 6

Mehtab tackled thrice, made four clearances and blocks each in addition to maintaining a 92 per cent passing accuracy. However, 18 games down the season, one would have expected him to take a better stock once Bengaluru started getting a stronghold over the flow of events.

Vignesh Dakshinamurthy – 5.5

Vignesh committed into four tackles and put in a couple of crosses but could not induce the necessary creativity from the flanks into the frontline.

Lalengmawia Ralte – 6

Apuia completed 96 per cent of his tackles and made three tackles and clearances each to deliver a fairly solid performance shielding the four-man backline.

Ahmed Jahouh – 5.5

The Moroccan midfielder attempted six tackles and created two goal-scoring chances in a night when not many things went in favour of Mumbai eventually.

Alberto Noguera – 5.5

With seven tackles and three clearances, Noguera put in an incredible defensive shift but that perhaps pegged him back from completely demonstrating his offensive capabilities.

Lallianzuala Chhangte – 5

Chhangte had a rare quiet night on the field as his overall contributions were only restricted to a solitary on-shot target and a cross eventually.

Jorge Pereyra Diaz – 5

Diaz was starved of quality service and that reflected in his rather insipid performance upfront. The Argentine tried to drop back in order to earn multiple (4) fouls but Mumbai could not capitalise upon it appropriately.

Bipin Singh – 5

Bipin was taken off quite early (57th minute) for Vikram Pratap Singh as the head coach looked to shake things up after conceding a goal to Sunil Chhetri.

Substitutes

Mandar Rao Dessai – 4.5

Mandar put in a cross and tackled once but the left-back couldn’t really have any significant impact in the game.

Rostyn Griffiths – 5.5

Rostyn tackled twice and assisted Fall’s goal in the 77th minute.

Vikram Pratap Singh – 5.5

Vikram created two goal-scoring opportunities, put in four crosses but the required composure and efficiency was missing from his front in the final-third.

Rowllin Borges – 5

Borges was one of the final throws of the dice made by Buckingham but even his substitution couldn’t salvage the required result for the Islanders.

Ayush Chikkhara – N.A.
