FIFA Club World Cup 2022: All you need to know
The competition is currently underway
In contrast to the FIFA World Cup, the FIFA Club World Cup features teams from many continents competing. Every continent has its own competition; for instance, Europe has the Champions League, and the teams that place first there advance to the Club World Cup.
Although the competition was not contested from 2001 to 2005 due to a number of significant factors, the most significant of which was the bankruptcy of FIFA's international market partner International Sport and Leisure (ISL), the competition was initially organised in 2000.
The annual spectacle has been going on since 2005, and various countries have hosted it, including Brazil, Japan, the United Arab Emirates, Morocco, and Qatar.
Seven teams from seven different continents are competing in the tournament, including teams from the AFC Champions League (Asia), CAF Champions League (Africa), CONCACAF Champions League (North, Central America, and the Caribbean), CONMEBOL Libertadores (South America), OFC Champions League (Oceania), and UEFA Champions League (Europe).
In these competitions, host nations also take part. If they advance, they play the Oceania champions in a play-off, and whoever prevails advances to the quarterfinals to face the winners of Asia, Africa, and North America.
The winner of the semi-final, where they compete against champions from Europe or South America, advances to the championship match.
In order to draw in more broadcasters and sponsors, FIFA President Gianni Infantino has declared that the event will accept 32 teams starting in 2025.
The International Federation of Professional Footballers and the World Leagues Forum, however, quickly criticised the concept.
