The upcoming Champions League 2022-23 Round of 16 tie will mark the first-ever meeting between these two clubs, setting the stage for a new rivalry as they prepare to face each other twice this season.
Interestingly, there are players who have previously featured for both Dortmund and Chelsea. Let's look at the players who have played for both clubs.
5. Thorgan Hazard (Chelsea 2012-2015, Dortmund 2019-)
Thorgan Hazard, a Belgian forward, used to play for Chelsea alongside his brothers Eden Hazard and Kylian Hazard. He signed with the West London club in the summer of 2012 from French team Lens. However, he only played once for Chelsea's U-21 side before being loaned out to Zulte Waregem.
In 2019, Hazard left Borussia Monchengladbach to join Dortmund. He has since played in 120 matches for the club, scoring 18 goals and provided 12 assists. In January 2023, he went on loan to PSV Eindhoven from Dortmund.
4. Michy Batshuayi (Chelsea 2016-2022 , Dortmund 2018 )
Michy Batshuayi, a Belgian forward, has had the privilege of playing for both Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund in recent years. However, despite spending six full seasons at Chelsea, he was not a regular fixture at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea signed Batshuayi for £33.2 million from French club Olympique de Marseille in the summer of 2016, but he only made 77 appearances for the Blues' first team, scoring 25 goals and contributing six assists.
During his time at Chelsea, Batshuayi was loaned out to various other clubs, including Borussia Dortmund for six-month in January 2018. The Belgian forward thrived during his time at the German club, scoring nine goals and providing one assist in just 14 appearances.
3. Andre Schurrle (Chelsea 2013-2015, Dortmund 2016-2020)
During his relatively short club career that ended in 2020, Andre Schurrle played for both Chelsea and Borussia Dortmund.
In 2013, Schurrle joined the Blues from German club Bayer Leverkusen for a transfer fee of around £18 million. He spent one-and-a-half seasons with Chelsea, scoring 14 goals and providing three assists in 65 appearances. Additionally, he won the Premier League in 2015. Schurrle joined Borussia Dortmund from Wolfsburg in 2016, where he had a brief stint. During his time with the German giants, he scored eight goals and provided 10 assists in 51 appearance
2. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (Dortmund 2013-2018, Chelsea 2022- )
In 2013, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang joined Borussia Dortmund from French club Saint-Étienne. Over the course of four-and-a-half seasons with Dortmund, the 33-year-old striker became one of the club's all-time leading goal scorers, with a total of 141 goals and 36 assists to his name.
In August 2022, Aubameyang signed with Chelsea after playing for Barcelona. He has played in 17 matches, scoring 3 goals and providing 1 assist. However, he is currently facing challenges at Chelsea as he was not selected by Graham Potter for the Champions League squad for round of 16.
1. Christian Pulisic (Dortmund 2016-2019, Chelsea 2019- )
Christian Pulisic is the only player who has performed well in both Dortmund and Chelsea. He started his Dortmund career in club's academy, playing for U-17 and U-19 teams before making his senior squad debut in 2016. He played 127 matches for Dortmund, scoring 19 goals and providing 26 assists.
In 2019, Pulisic joined Chelsea from Dortmund. During his time with Chelsea, he won the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Super Cup in 2021. He also won the FIFA Club World Cup in 2022. Pulisic has made 131 appearances for Chelsea, scoring 26 goals and providing 21 assists.
