Turnbull scored the first goal ever at Old Trafford on February 19, 1910, during a 4-3 loss to Liverpool, but later grabbed nine goals breaking Pearson's record.

He joined Manchester United in 1906, where he assisted with winning the 1908 and 1911 league championships as well as the 1909 FA Cup. Because of the Great War, he departed the club in 1915.
