The goalkeeper came under heavy criticism for his behaviour in the penalty shootout against France in the World Cup final.

According to reports, FIFA is considering implementing an "anti-Emiliano Martinez rule modification" that would forbid a goalkeeper from chatting to or distracting someone who is about to take a penalty.

On Saturday, the International FA Board will have its annual general meeting in London. The IFAB are also anticipated to discuss the game's existing rules.

And it looks that one of the probable rule changes is related to Martinez's contentious theatrics in the penalty shootout following last year's World Cup final between France and Argentina.

How did it come into contention?

In an effort to undermine the opposition's confidence, the 30-year-old deployed psychological tricks. In fact, he tried to get inside Kingsley Coman's brain and caused referee Szymon Marciniak to kindly step in.

Martinez's theatrics continued when he attempted to confront Kolo Muani. Though if the new regulation comes into action, the Argentine might need to reconsider his strategies for blocking penalties.

When the IFAB meets on March 4, according to the Spanish daily Marca, they will be prepared to take a position against such behaviour.

Goalkeepers would be forbidden from "distracting the shooter," which would include things like prolonging the performance of the penalty or touching the goal posts, crossbar, or also goal itself, according to the board's proposed rule.

Martinez theatrics at the WC Final

Martinez was heard saying "I've watched you!" on many occasions during the penalty shootout at the Lusail Stadium, in addition to his movement between the posts.

Simon Jordan, the talkSPORT anchor, charged Martinez with "cheating" and "manipulating conditions" during the World Cup final.

“Martinez’s actions, I thought it was cheating, the holding of the ball and throwing it the other way,” Jordan said.

“The goalkeeper’s actions, I don’t think it was gamesmanship, I don’t think it’s part of the game, I think it’s cheating, he further said.

"For a referee to allow the goalkeeper to manipulate the circumstances, to heighten the pressure, to increase it, I think was one of the shortcomings at that moment in time.”
