Chelsea and Dortmund are set to face off in the UEFA Champions League (UCL) in what promises to be an exciting match between two top teams. The match will take place at Stamford Bridge, the home of Chelsea Football Club, on March 8, 2023. Both teams have a strong history in the competition, with Chelsea winning the UCL twice, in 2012 and 2021, while Dortmund has been runners-up twice, in 2013 and 2022. Chelsea comes into the match as one of the favourites to win the competition this season, while Dortmund will be looking to go one step further and claim the title.
The match will be a battle between Chelsea’s solid defence and Dortmund’s attacking prowess. Chelsea will be looking to keep a clean sheet and score on the counter-attack, while Dortmund will be looking to dominate possession and create chances for their attackers.
Overall, the match promises to be a thrilling encounter between two top teams in the UCL. Chelsea will be favourites to win at home, but Dortmund has the talent to cause an upset with already having a 1-0 lead going into this RO16 clash. Fans can expect a high-quality game of football, with both teams looking to advance to the quarterfinals of the competition.
Player to watch
Chelsea: Joao Felix
Only Joao Felix stuck out among the Chelsea stars in February. The Portuguese forward managed to score his first goal for the side in the previous month’s game against West Ham on February 11th, despite rejoining the squad following a three-match ban. Felix put on a spirited showing, and even though Chelsea hasn’t scored since then, he’s anticipated starting the new month off right for himself and the team. He was also a key player in Chelsea’s win over Leeds.
Dortmund: Marco Reus
The legendary Dortmund captain has been a key component of BVB’s winning squad while recently scoring in the clash against Leipzig. His recent man-of-the-match performance has also helped Julian Brandt and now injured Karim Adeyemi’s game, which is less of a concern for Dortmund now that they are the second-highest scoring in the league behind Bayern. He’ll be the one to rely on as Dortmund as they go to Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 lead.
Match facts
- Chelsea has won six of their first seven UEFA Champions League home games against German teams and is facing Borussia Dortmund for the first time.
- For the eighth time in a row, Chelsea suffered an away defeat in the first leg of a UEFA Champions League final stage match at Dortmund. But in the prior seven, the Blues have advanced more frequently than they have been ousted.
- Borussia Dortmund’s last five away UEFA Champions League encounters against England teams have ended in losses.
Injury and team news
Thiago Silva will be out for six weeks, which will cause Chelsea a severe blow. As his substitute, Fofana stood up and helped Chelsea in defeating Leeds. The team decision is made more interesting by the return of Kante and Pulisic to training because it is unclear whether they are healthy enough to be included in the group or not.
Both Morey and Moukoko will be out with injuries for Dortmund. Another player whose status is up for debate is Adeyemi, who scored the UCL goal in the first leg of this encounter.
Prediction
When Chelsea and Dortmund face off in a football match, it would likely be a closely contested game with both teams having a chance of winning based on their respective strengths and weaknesses. Ultimately, the outcome of the match would depend on various factors such as team form, player fitness, and tactical decisions made by the managers.
Since Chelsea is not in their best of forms while Dortmund are unbeatable since the start of 2023, the latter has the upper hand due to their attacking prowess and midfield maestros Bellingham and Reus.
