Ratings: Mehtab Singh, Ayush Chhikara star in Mumbai City's win over Chennaiyin FC
The 20-year-old forward scored his first goal in Mumbai City colours.
Mumbai City FC ended their Hero Super Cup 2023 campaign with a 1-0 win over Chennaiyin FC on Wednesday, 19 April. Young forward Ayush Chhikara scored his first-ever goal for the Islanders in the first half, which proved to be the decisive one to give his side the win. Despite the win, Mumbai were knocked out of the tournament – with NorthEast United progressing from the group to the semi-finals due to a better head-to-head record with Mumbai City.

Mumbai City
Mohammad Nawaz – 6.0
A little bit shaky in possession and nearly conceded an embarrassing own goal in the second half. But safe with his collection and made some nice saves.
Halen Nongdtu – 6.5
The young centre-back was disciplined at the back and helped maintain a strong-shaped backline.
Rahul Bheke – 7.5
Bheke commanded a sturdy defensive line and neutralized Rahim Ali’s threat too! Maintained good positioning and came up with some clutch challenges.
Mehtab Singh – 8.5
Mehtab was really a proactive figure in the backline and often got into the right spaces at the right time to frustrate Chennaiyin FC. Kept Kwame Karikari quiet and made some goal-saving blocks as well as clearances in a superb display.
Vikram Partap Singh – 7.0
Singh was assigned to the right-wing role and put in a tireless effort. He made persistent runs on the right, tormenting Chennaiyin FC with his speed and created some chances too!
Lalengmawia Ralte – 6.5
Apuia was composed with his distribution and registered some impressive progressive passes to play his teammates into space. A bit aggressive with his tackles, getting booked as a result.
Vinit Rai – 6.5
Rai played as the advanced-most midfielder and was really clever with his final third passes. Helped his teammates by being assertive with his work in midfield.
Rowllin Borges – 7.5
Borges worked hard to stop Chennaiyin FC’s flow through midfield and ensured that their midfielders didn’t get much room. Kept Nasser El Khayati quiet and troubled Chennaiyin with his set pieces too.
Lallianzuala Chhangte – 7.0
Chhangte played more centrally than usual and embraced a creative role. He played a brilliant pass to allow Bipin Singh to set up the goal and was really clever with his passes.
Bipin Singh – 8.0
Bipin worked very hard by going up and down the left flank and smartly assisted Ayush Chhikara’s goal with an impressive run. He provided a lot of defensive support and was terrorizing on counter-attacks, speeding his way into promising situations and creating major chances too.
Ayush Chhikara – 7.5
Repaid his coach’s faith by scoring his first-ever Mumbai City goal with a smart finish from close range. Efficient in the final third and troubled Chennaiyin FC with his movement.
Substitutes
Gurkirat Singh – 6.5
Singh made some great runs on the counter-attacks, but unable to register any shots to test the goalkeeper.
Hardik Bhatt – N/A
Bhatt helped in adding more defensive cover towards the end to help Mumbai City see off the result.
Vignesh Dakshinamurthy – N/A
Vignesh made a late cameo, helping Mumbai City get the clean sheet.
Chennaiyin FC
Samik Mitra – 6.0
Samik couldn’t do anything to save the goal, but was pretty disciplined with his shot-stopping and distribution afterwards.
Edwin Vanspaul – 7.5
Vanspaul was probably Chennaiyin’s biggest creative threat and made some great runs through the right. He set up some big chances with his crosses, but was unable to see himself rewarded for his hard work.
Vafa Hakhameshi – N/A
Had a difficult first 30-odd minutes and was taken off soon after pulling his hamstring.
Fallou Diagne – 6.0
Diagne positioned himself well to stop a number of Mumbai City attacks and ensured that his backline was not completely exposed. Struggled in attacking set-pieces, lacking any threat with his attempts.
Narayan Das – 6.5
Das was quite proactive towards the left and worked hard to neutralize Mumbai City from creating major chances through that side. Lacked the attacking threat, though.
Jiteshwor Singh – 5.5
Jiteshwor struggled to help Chennaiyin FC win the midfield battle, nor was he able to create any major chances. Taken off at half-time.
Anirudh Thapa – 7.0
Thapa was an energetic figure in midfield and often got into some promising pockets of space. Created some nice chances, but unable to see them converted.
Julius Duker – 7.0
Duker was a composed, disciplined figure in his midfield role and played deeper than usual. Passed the ball around well with his inviting forward passes, and sent in some nice set-pieces, as well as providing defensive cover.
Aakash Sangwan – N/A
Unfortunate to be taken off alongside Vafa to allow Karikari come into the attack.
Nasser El Khayati – 5.0
El Khayati was unable to run the show for his side, being choked out by the Mumbai City midfielders. Created a few half-chances, but unable to provide any major threat or get close to scoring.
Rahim Ali – 5.0
Ali was full of running through the channels, but couldn’t get on the end of any major chances or get the better of the Mumbai City defenders.
Substitutes
Bikash Yumnam – 6.5
Bikash added some more defensive protection on the right, not allowing Bipin the freedom he got in the first half.
Kwame Karikari – 5.5
Karikari was introduced to add a goal-scoring threat for Chennaiyin, but couldn’t really bully the Mumbai backline. He had a few chances, but put his efforts wide every time.
Mohammed Rafique – 6.5
Rafique came closest to scoring for the Marina Machans, hitting the bar with a brilliant volley towards the final stretch of the game. Added energy in midfield.
Senthamil S – 6.0
Senthamil was proactive towards the end and got a decent chance to score, but put the header over the bar.
Ninthoi Meetei – N/A
The young winger sent in some nice crosses towards the end, but couldn’t create anything really major.
