Brazilian forward Diego Mauricio extends contract with Odisha FC
The player won the Golden Boot award in the 2022-23 ISL season.
Odisha FC have put pen to paper with the ferocious Brazilian attacker Diego Mauricio, in a two-year contract extension, that keeps him at the club until 2025. The club made the announcement public on Monday, the 3rd of April, through its social media handles.
An impressive ISL 2022-23 campaign, that saw the Brazilian put up some scintillating performances, and also top the goalscoring charts, was convincing enough for the Juggernauts to waste no time, and make the lethal attacker stay at the club for another two years.
“We are absolutely delighted that Diego decided to stay at the club. Diego has proven himself in the two years he has spent at the club that he is one of the top strikers in the league. I wish him and his family all the very best,” said club president Raj Athwal, following Diego’s extension.
Diego Mauricio’s message to Odisha fans
Following the announcement of his extension, Diego Mauricio also expressed his delight, and left a small message for all Odisha FC fans.
“I belong to Odisha. I love the people and the city. The fans have shown me how much they love me. My family is very happy that I decided to say. I have had a great time here, and I am looking forward to continuing my journey with the club. I believe we can achieve great things together,” he said.
Diego Mauricio’s journey with Odisha so far
Diego first signed with Odisha FC in 2020, and was very impressive in his initial campaign with the club, scoring 12 goals throughout the league campaign, before moving to Qatar for playing with Al Shahania SC.
Unfortunately, his stay with the middle-eastern club didn’t go as planned, and in January 2022, Mauricio joined Mumbai City as a short-term replacement. In the little time Diego had with the Islanders, he did pretty well, and also scored in their iconic win in the AFC Champions League.
In July 2022, the Brazilian reunited with Odisha, in a one-year deal, and put on a show throughout the season, proving to be the team’s most valuable asset, and making them extend his stay for another two years.
Diego Mauricio will once again be in action with Odisha FC in the Super Cup, which begins from April 8.
