FIFA established a World Cup competition for players under the age of 17 in 1985, but CAF organised a knockout home-and-away qualifying system to qualify players for that event. The AFCON U17 denotes a competition that has been promoted by CAF into a full standalone competition and is hosted by a nation since 1995.

The CAF Executive Committee voted to rename the competition the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations on August 6, 2015. However, after the announcement, the AFCON U17 was pictured alongside the senior Africa Cup of Nations on the published logo for the event.

Total S.A., a major French energy and petroleum company that will become TotalEnergies on May 28, 2021, signed an 8-year sponsorship agreement with the CAF to promote its tournaments on July 21, 2016.

There will be 12 teams competing in the event starting with the 2023 edition. The COVID-19 epidemic in Africa and its effects caused CAF to cancel the 2021 edition, which would have put it into action.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) organises the U-17 Africa Cup of Nations, also known as the TotalEnergies U-17 Africa Cup of Nations for the purposes of sponsorship, every two years for its member countries with players under the age of 17. It serves as the competition for African national teams to qualify for the FIFA U-17 World Cup.
