Coaches’ jobs in the English top flight are fairly uncertain
When it comes to the world of football, the English Premier League is undoubtedly one of the most prestigious and widely followed competitions. Over the years, the league has seen numerous clubs rise to the pinnacle of success, while others have struggled to maintain their footing.
One aspect that often plays a significant role in determining a club's success is the management team that leads them. However, as the history of the Premier League shows, not every club has been fortunate enough to find a stable and successful manager.
In this article, we will take a closer look at the top five clubs that have sacked the most managers in the Premier League history.
5. Newcastle United Football Club - 8
Newcastle United Football Club is a club that is known for its passionate fan base and rich history. However, the club has also had its fair share of struggles, including a total of eight managerial changes since the start of the Premier League.
The club has shown a willingness to make changes when things are not going well, but this has often led to instability and a lack of continuity. Despite this, the club has remained a mainstay in the Premier League and has seen some memorable moments under the management of Kevin Keegan and Sir Bobby Robson.
The last Newcastle United manager to be sacked was Steve Bruce, who was relieved of his duties on October 20, 2021. With the appointment of Eddie Howe back in November 2021 and the Saudi Public Investment Funds’ financial takeover, the club has seen major progress currently standing in 3rd place in the Premier League standings and has a possible chance to feature in the Champions League next year.

4. Aston Villa Football Club - 12
Aston Villa Football Club, a Midlands-based club that has a rich history in English football. However, the club has also had its fair share of struggles, including a total of 12 managerial changes since the start of the Premier League. Despite this, the club has remained a stalwart in the competition and saw a resurgence under the management of Dean Smith.
The appointment of Smith in 2018 was been a turning point for the club, with the team achieving promotion to the Premier League in 2019 and subsequently consolidating their place in the top flight.
However, similar to Hasenhuttl at Southampton, being successful does not give you a bulletproof vest as Jones was shown the door by the Eagles in favor of appointing Chelsea legend Frank Lampard as their new boss. However, unlike his time as a player, Lampard’s run at Villa Park turned into a disappointment before he was sacked after a single season at the club making way for Unai Emery.
3. Southampton Football Club - 12
Southampton Football Club is a club that has seen a resurgence in recent years, thanks in part to the astute management of Ralph Hasenhuttl. However, the road to success has not always been smooth for the south coast club.
With 12 managerial changes since the start of the Premier League, Southampton are third on the list of clubs that have sacked the most managers. Despite this, the club has shown resilience and a willingness to persevere through tough times.
The appointment of Hasenhuttl in 2018 worked like a masterstroke, with the Austrian leading the club to a top-half finish in the Premier League. However, like every fairytale story, Hasenhuttl’s run with the club came to an end in November 2022, and opened talks with former Luton boss Nathan Jones.
Although unlike his predecessor Hasenhuttl who had a decent run with the club during his tenure, Jones did not last even three months with the club before he was shown the door this year in February, 14 games after his appointment, talk about a rough day at the job.
2. Tottenham Hotspur Football Club - 14
Tottenham Hotspur Football Club, commonly known as Spurs, is another London-based club that has had its fair share of managerial changes. With 14 changes since the inception of the Premier League, Spurs are second only to Chelsea in the number of managers sacked.
Like Chelsea, Spurs have also had some high-profile names at the helm, including Harry Redknapp, Andre Villas-Boas, and Mauricio Pochettino. While some managers have achieved success with the club, others have been shown the door due to a lack of progress or disagreements with the board.
In the most recent example, we all saw the massive outburst from Antonio Conte in his press conference where he slammed the club and players in broad daylight. That made sure that his sacking was inevitable but it does not make things any better for the London-based club.
1. Chelsea Football Club - 15
With a staggering 15 managerial changes since the start of the Premier League, Chelsea Football Club holds the dubious honor of being the club that has sacked the most number of managers. The London-based club has been owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich since 2003 and has since seen a revolving door of managers.
With American owner Todd Boehly taking over the club in 2022 as its new owner following Abramovich being ousted from the club, it seems like things have not changed a lot.
From Claudio Ranieri to Jose Mourinho, Carlo Ancelotti to Antonio Conte, Thomas Tuchel who even won the Champions League, and most recently, Graham Potter who was appointed this season, Chelsea have seen some of the biggest names in football management take the helm of the club.
While some managers have achieved great success at the club, others have been shown the door for failing to meet the lofty expectations set by the owner.
