Eddie Howe's Magpies started the game strongly and were gifted an early lead. In the 10th minute, a loose pass out from the back by Sunderland's Luke O'Nien was intercepted by Nick Woltemade. He immediately fed Anthony Gordon [10'], who coolly finished into the bottom corner to put the hosts 1-0 up. Newcastle dominated the remainder of the first half, nearly doubling their lead when Sven Botman headed against the post just before the break.

Sunderland came out fighting in the second half and found their equalizer in the 57th minute. Following a corner and a scramble in the box, Aaron Ramsdale could only punch the ball as far as Trai Hume. The ball was hooked back in, and Chemsdine Talbi [57'] drilled home the rebound from close range to restore parity.

Newcastle thought they had retaken the lead with 15 minutes to go when substitute Malick Thiaw headed in a corner, but the goal was ruled out for offside against Jacob Murphy.

As the game looked destined for a draw, substitute Enzo Le Fée cut the ball back from the byline in the 90th minute. Brian Brobbey [90'] saw his initial effort saved by Ramsdale, but the Dutch forward made no mistake with the rebound, converting from close range to send the travelling Sunderland fans into absolute delirium!
