Everton 0 - 2 Manchester United, FA Cup fifth round,2004-05
It was the return of the prodigal son, Wayne Rooney back at Goodson Park on the evening of 19th February 2005 as the Everton academy product prepared to face his former team for the first time.
At the time a young 20-year-old Cristiano Ronaldo also showed promise as he dribbled past a couple of Everton players on the right wing through his fabulous quick feet and skill, & putting in a wonderful looping cross for Quinton Fortune to jump over his marker and open the scoring at the 23rd minute.
Rooney's every touch was booed to the loudest but he almost made the craziest of headlines after being put through by Quinton Fortune with a lobbed ball over the last Defender. But his powerful low effort was Instinctively saved by Everron's Nigel Martyn.
However, the hostile atmosphere didn't affect the result as Cristiano Ronaldo tapped in a rebound effort from a Paul Scholes direct free-kick after Martyn had made another crucial save. United went through to the quarter-finals, but the tension in the air was apparent throughout, making it a classic now.
Everton 3 - 3 Manchester United, Premier League 2010-11
Manchester United faced off yet again against a Top 4 chasing Everton side, ably led by the brilliant David Moyes. Everton enjoyed their underdog tag & thrived with their performances, & that's exactly what happened in this match. After going behind 3-1 to goals from Fletcher, Vidic & Berbatov, Everton produced a miraculous comeback, scoring twice in deep stoppage time to draw the result 3-3 & be remembered as an all-time classic.
While Wayne Rooney was dropped on his return to Goodison parked, United had found goal-scoring from unlikely sources such as Vidic & Fletcher on the day & was cruising towards a win after Berbatov's technical finish using the outside of his boot had but United 3-1 ahead after 66 minutes. Tim Cahill got the second one for Everton, after out jumping his marker Vidic, in the 91st minute.
However, Arteta completed the stunning comeback after Fellaini had won the header in the box, & the ball favourably fell in Mikel's path who struck it with the full force of his boots & saw one of the loudest cheers from the home fans possible & Sir Alex in dismay, in his 700th match as a manager.
Manchester United 4 - 4 Everton, Premier League 2011-12
Well, this was the game which went on to change the course of history in the Premier League for more than one reason. The slip-up against Everton had major implications in the Premier League title race. United started the matchday, five points ahead of their city rivals. However, the draw sparked a momentum shift, as Manchester City pulled off an improbable late title charge, & ended up winning the Premier League title on goal difference on the final day, through a Sergio Aguero strike in added time. The era & aura of Sir Alex seemed like it was coming to an end, as City became the dominant force in Manchester & England in the decade.
David Moyes & Marouane Fellaini celebrated their result for Everton, but little did they know that their fate would be written in Manchester colours later, as David Moyes ended up becoming the successor to Sir Alex Ferguson in 2013, and ended up signing Fellaini.
Everton 1 - 2 Manchester United, FA Cup Semi-final, 2015-16
It was the star signing Anthony Martial who turned into a cult hero that day as he was very influential against an Everton side with quality players such as Lukaku, and Barkley, in a semi-final at Wembley Stadium. The win helped United progress into the FA Cup final, which they ended up winning & manager Louis Van Gaal's only trophy at Manchester United, who was sacked after winning the trophy.
Martial assisted Fellaini's opening goal as he skillfully dribbled from the left evading a defender & putting it across with his left foot towards a tap-in, in the 34th minute. Everton responded well when Romelu Lukaku's effort was saved off the line by Wayne Rooney. Later in the match, David De Gea came into his own and saved Lukaku's penalty crucially again. However, a deflected own goal of Smalling brought the Toffees back into the game.
However, Martial had the last laugh, as he played a one-two with Rashford & then tried another one with Ander Herrera who managed to somehow return the pass to the Frenchman, & the winner went in in the 93rd minute, & Martial became a crowd favourite after that, & this was recorded as another classic.
Manchester United 3 - 3 Everton, Premier League 2020-21
It was the 6th of February, & arguably the most significant day in the footballing memory of Manchester United fans (63rd death anniversary of Busby Babes). However, the footballing memories of the Covid hit season did coincide with a classic against Everton, yet again.
The game began in an empty Old Trafford, as Edison Cavani opened the score sheet for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men, in the 24th minute. Bruno Fernandes then went on to score a long-range effort, his 30th goal of the season.
However, Carlo Ancelotti's men responded right back with two goals in three minutes with Doucoure pulling one back from close range in the 49th minute & James Rodrigues following it up with a fantastic half-volley in the 52nd minute to make it 2-2. Scott Mctominay's headed effort in the 70th minute looked to have the crucial winner on an auspicious day for everyone connected with United.
But, Dominic Calvert Lewin ensured that Everton would not go empty-handed, as he equalised with the last kick of the ball, through a set-piece, in the 95th minute, and adding to the folklore of great matches played between these two north-west sides.
