Delhi FC secure I-League promotion with win over Ambernath United
Delhi FC topped the Final Rounds of the Second Division League.
Delhi FC have secured promotion to the second tier of Indian football, and have joined Shillong Lajong as the two latest entrants into the I-League. The club from the capital city defeated Ambernath United Atlanta in an emphatic final matchday clash, that saw the team in black rise from third position to all the way to the first, courtesy a superior goal difference than Shillong Lajong.
Delhi FC started their Second Division League journey in a tough Group A against the likes of Downtown Heroes and Jagat Singh Palahi FC. In what turned out to be a close clash in Group A, Delhi FC edged out by a small margin, and made it to the Final Rounds of the competition.
Once into the final rounds, Delhi FC didn’t have the most ideal start, and looked to be in a disastrous state as they secured only a point from their first two games.
With two games left to play, Delhi FC had to win both the ties, to secure promotion, and they did just that. Two impressive victories against United SC and Ambernath did the job for Surinder Singh’s men, as they topped the group, and made it to the second tier of club football in India - the I-League.
The tale of Delhi FC’s rise
Dlehi FC was founded in 1994, and started its journey in the Delhi ‘B’ division League. In 2001, the club gained promotion into the ‘A’ division league of Delhi.
Following this, in 2009 Delhi FC made it to the Senior Division after yet another promotion.
In August 2020, Minerva Academy owner Ranjit Bajaj took over Delhi FC by buying 90% stake in the club after selling Punjab FC to RoundGlass completely.
Delhi FC also participated in the 130th edition of Durand Cup and reached the quarter-finals, beating ISL side Kerala Blasters in their final group match.
Now with this remarkable feat that they have achieved, Delhi FC have taken a gigantic step towards their aim of ‘earning promotion to the Indian Super League’, and have written another exceptional chapter, in the befitting story of the club’s ascent.
