The Magpies host the high-flying Albion in a bid to solidify their spot in Top Four.

This clash is between the two teams who have outperformed themselves in terms of their previous seasons. On one hand, Newcastle is looking to return to European competition first time since 2004, whereas Brighton has played some of the brilliant football seen this year in the Premier League and will be looking to secure their highest position since their introduction in the league.

With top three finish on the line, Newcastle have kept just one clean sheet in their last 15 Premier League games, a 2-0 win against Manchester United in April. They've conceded twice in both of their last two, last conceding multiple goals in three consecutive games in December 2021. Talking about hosting their home-visiting rivals, Newcastle have won just one of their 11 Premier League games against Brighton (D6 L4), though it was in this exact fixture last season (2-1). It's their lowest win rate against any side they've faced more than twice in the competition (9%).

The De Zerbi’s Men have transformed the way competition used to look at Brighton. They have won eight Premier League away games this season, with only top two sides Manchester City (11) and Arsenal (12) winning more. Meanwhile, only Arsenal (35) have scored more on the road than Brighton (33) this term. Brighton have kept eight Premier League clean sheets against Newcastle, more than against any other side. They've kept a clean sheet in 73% of their Premier League games against the Magpies (8/11) – of all teams to face another more than 10 times in the competition, only Chelsea against Portsmouth (79%) have recorded a higher share of shutouts (11/14).

In the 35 matches so far this season, In terms of goals scored Newcastle ranks sixth in the Premier League with 63 goals and has conceded 31 goals, first in the league. Whereas Brighton ranks eighth with 45 goals surrendered but with 66 goals in 34 matches, Brighton ranks fourth in the Premier League. It is an interesting match-up between the teams who have had phenomenal seasons and have increased the expectations from their supporters for the coming seasons. Brighton despite losing the players and managers has only come up from 9th position finish to 6th this season, they are no doubt the dark horses of this league.

Player to watch

Newcastle United: Callum Wilson

The reignited Callum Wilson has scored 17 Premier League goals this season, including 10 in his last nine appearances. It's the most by a Newcastle player in a single top-flight campaign since Alan Shearer in 2003-04 (22). Callum Wilson has scored 10 Premier League braces for Newcastle (including three in his last four games) but is yet to net a hat-trick for the Magpies. Only Sadio Mané at Liverpool (12) and Ryan Giggs for Manchester United (11) have netted more braces for a side without getting a hat-trick in the competition.

Brighton: Kaoru Mitoma

The Japanese has lit up the premier league and is the most notorious player in the Brighton squad who has taken the left flank by storm. His goal contribution current season has reached 11 goals (07 goals and 04 assists) but what he has also done is brought life to this squad since his arrival. His pace, dribbling, and knack to find the goal has been felt from Liverpool to Arsenal and is a concern for the defense. His match-up against Trippier would be the highlight of 1v1 and could again create the difference for his team.

Match Facts

  • Brighton has scored eight Premier League goals from teenagers this season (Ferguson 4, Enciso 3, Buonanotte 1), more than any other side. The last team to net more such goals in a campaign was Manchester United in 2019-20 (11).
  • Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has lost just one of his eight Premier League meetings with Brighton (W5 D2), winning all four of his home games against the Seagulls in the top flight.
  • Deniz Undav has scored three goals in his last four Premier League games for Brighton, having failed to find the net in any of his first 14 appearances in the competition.
  • The reverse fixture between Newcastle and Brighton this season took place 278 days ago, on the 13th of August 2022 (0-0). Excluding the 2019-20 campaign (which had a 3-month break during lockdown), it's the longest gap between two sides meeting in a single Premier League season.

Match Prediction for Newcastle United vs Brighton

In the previous match, Newcastle looked shaky in the defense against their visit to Leeds and lost against Arsenal which brought an end to their splendid winning run of 03 matches and might have created a bit of an anxious state at the club. With Liverpool and Man United trailing the top–4 finish a slip in the form could see them losing their spot whereas Brighton has played fluid football throughout the season defeating United and Arsenal in recent matches.

Their 5-1 defeat to Everton was a shocker at home but that’s what Brighton is, a surprise in the box for Premier League teams. For this match, it will be an equally contested match with both sides are equally matches and could go either way depending on who wants three points the most.

Prediction: Newcastle United 2 - 2 Brighton
