Which players have scored against most teams in a Premier League season?
Two players have made it to the list this season
The Premier League is arguably the most competitive league in football. The English league comprises many competitive teams, which makes the league end-to-end at times. The 2022–23 season shows how good the teams outside of the "big six" are. This saga continues right from the introduction of the league. The competitive nature of the league sometimes makes it difficult for the attacker to score a goal in every game.
However, there are some players, especially strikers, who score goals week in and week out. They are also capable of scoring goals against different teams. In the initial stages of the Premier League, 22 teams were playing. Then the number of teams was brought down to 20.
A few strikers have breached a lot of different defences in a single season. These players have broken various records and scored against more than 15 different teams in the Premier League. Some of these players have retired, and others are still trying to break their personal records. We take a look at the players who top the list for scoring goals against the most teams in the Premier League in a season.
7. Harry Kane - 16 Goals (2022-23)
The Tottenham Hotspur striker is one of the best strikers of our generation and is definitely a loyal player. Harry Kane has scored 278 goals and assisted 64 times in 434 appearances throughout all competitions for Spurs. He is also the top scorer for Tottenham Hotspur, having beaten Jimmy Greaves's record of 266 goals.
Harry Kane has scored 211 goals in the Premier League and is en route to potentially beating Alan Shearer's record of 270 goals as well. Despite not winning a trophy with Spurs, he has won three Golden Boots in 13 years. He has also scored against 16 teams in the Premier League in the 2022–23 season, which ensures another individual record for the Tottenham legend.
6. Erling Haaland - 16 Goals (2022-23)
It is no surprise that Erling Haaland has made his way to yet another goal-scoring record. This record is very impressive, but what Haaland has accomplished overall this season is much better. Adding to all of his records is this one, as he did in the 2022–23 season.
Erling Haaland has scored the most goals in a single Premier League season (36) and the most goals by a Premier League player in all competitions ( 52). He is also the fastest player (in 25 games) to score 30 UEFA Champions League goals. Overall, Erling Haaland has scored 52 goals in 50 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City. Moreover, he is also in contention to win the UEFA Champions League and the FA Cup this season. Pep's successor for Sergio Kun Aguero has finally been found and is proving to be a nightmare for Premier League teams.
5. Ian Wright - 16 Goals (1996-97)
One of the most underrated players of our generation Ian Wright is also arguably among Arsenal's top five greatest players ever. It is no wonder that Ian Wright has scored against 16 different teams in the Premier League.
Ian was a very prolific goalscorer, scoring 185 goals for the Gunners in 288 appearances throughout all competitions. Ian also scored 11 hat tricks during this time period. As it stands, Ian is still Arsenal's second-best top scorer.
4. Andy Cole - 17 (1993-94)
The Manchester United legend was a nightmare for defenders during his time. Before Haaland took over various records in the Premier League, Andy Cole had a few of his own. This includes scoring against 17 teams in the Premier League and being one of the highest goalscorers in the history of the league. Andy Cole also held the previous record for most goals scored in a single Premier League season. (34 in 42 matches). Andy Cole enjoyed a six-year spell at Manchester United, winning numerous trophies. He won eight major titles, including the iconic treble (PL, FA Cup, and UEFA Champions League in 1999).
Just as Newcastle United have earned qualification to the UEFA Champions League for the second time in their history, Andy Cole was there during their first time. He scored 17 goals in a 22-match season.
3. Alan Shearer - 17 Goals (1994-95)
Alan spent much of his time with Blackburn Rovers and Newcastle United. Alan Shearer is arguably the greatest striker the Premier League has ever seen. However, he has only won one trophy, which was the 1995 Premier League title with Blackburn Rovers. In that very season, Alan scored 34 goals and assisted 13 times in 42 PL matches to help Blackburn Rovers win the Premier League title.
He is the only player to have scored 30 or more goals in a single Premier League campaign, not once, not twice, but three times. Alan is the top scorer in the history of the Premier League with 260 goals. Considering his astonishing records, which arguably no one has come close to, it is shocking that Alan has not scored against all teams in a single PL campaign.
2. Robin Van Persie - 17 (2011-12)
Robin Van Persie spent about 11 seasons in the Premier League for both Arsenal and Manchester United. The Netherlands striker has scored 50 goals in over 100 caps.
Robin Van Persie started out his Premier League career with Arsenal under Arsene Wenger. He scored 35 goals in the 2011–12 season for Arsenal, which was a club record back then. Van Persie then joined Manchester United, where he won the Premier League title in his very first season.
1. Mohamed Salah - 17 (2017-18)
After joining Liverpool, Mohamed Salah scored 32 goals in 36 Premier League appearances and 44 goals overall across all competitions. This was his very first season. Mohamed Salah is not only a goalscorer but also a very direct winger who dribbles easily past players with his smooth body feints. Salah is the perfect mix of a goalscorer and a creator, and surely he has the potential to even top his own record and score against all teams in a single PL season. The Egyptian is the latest player to record the most goals against different clubs in a single season.
