But with an intense preparatory stage spanning over months and continents, head coach Bibiano Fernandes is daring to dream bigger than ever.

“We are aware of the level of the other three teams in the group but we have been preparing for this tournament for a while now and we have come here to win,” said Fernandes.

In the last few months, the Blue Colts have travelled to Europe to play against some of the strongest youth teams in the world, spent time in remote areas of Thailand to get their bodies used to the country’s conditions, and even trained with Vietnamese fan chants blaring on speakers as a way to remain unfazed when they face the Southeast Asian side.  

“The trip to Europe proved to be excellent exposure for the boys and just like our fellow Group D teams, we will be playing for a World Cup ticket.

“We have been working really hard and have tried all sorts of things in order to do well in this tournament. We know that no matter how well you prepare, the actual competition will be very different from the friendlies and the training sessions," said the 46-year-old.

“But Vietnam are a strong team and are expected to have their fans cheering for them, but I don’t want the boys to be intimidated by them. So we tried to create all kinds of situations for the team to ensure their preparations are well-rounded.”
