Top four players with most chances created in a Champions League final

Only one player won the title that night

Prolific goalscorers are usually the most sought-after players in football, as they're capable of winning matches on their own. However, one of the most important cogs in any attacking set-up is the creative force pulling the strings for the forwards. Regardless of the ever-changing nature of the transfer window, players who create chances on a regular basis will always be in demand.

Players capable of unlocking even the most stubborn defences with one magical pass on a regular basis are usually at a premium. The last decade has seen some of the most prolific chance creators ply their trade in Europe. But performing well in the final for any player in the Champions League is always special.

Here we take a look at players who have created the most chances in a Champions League Final:

Jermaine Pennanat (Liverpool) - 6 chances chances in 2006-07

Pennant played as a right winger. He had been described by former Newcastle United left-back José Enrique as a player with a similar style to that of Aaron Lennon and Theo Walcott. He was a skilled player who played a crucial role for Liverpool in the Champions League.

He used to beat the opponent's fullback with his dribbling skills. He created six chances in the 2007 Champions League final, in which Liverpool faced AC Milan. Unfortunately, Liverpool ended up on the losing side. But Jermaine's performance that night was very special.

Luka Modric (Real Madrid) - 7 chances created in 2015-16

A diminutive and technically gifted midfielder, Modrić is typically deployed as a creative playmaker and sets the tempo of the match by controlling possession from the middle of the pitch. He has been widely applauded by many football pundits, managers, and fellow players for his swift passing and long-range shots. He is also noted for his tactical intelligence and versatility in both attack and defence, as well as his vision, interpretation of space, and work rate.

The 2015-16 season was probably one of the best seasons of his career when he helped his team win the Champions League against arch-rivals Atletico Madrid. That night, he created seven chances that the Madrid forwards were not able to convert into goals. This was his third Champions League victory with Real Madrid.

Arjen Robben (Bayern Munich) - 8 chances created in 2011-12

Robben was regarded as one of the best wingers in the world. He was able to take on and beat defenders at the drop of a hat. Robben's ability to get to the byline and deliver accurate crosses instils fear into any defence. Robben often cuts inside on his left foot to move to a more central attacking position and uses his speed and dribbling skills to take on defenders until he finds the space to make an attempt at goal.

The 2012 Champions League final was probably one of the best Champions League finals between German giants Bayern and Chelsea. Chelsea won that night on penalties, but Robben was a threat to Chelsea's defence for the whole match. He created eight chances that night but was unfortunately not able to lift the title with his team.

Frank Lampard (Chelsea) - 8 chances created in 2007-08

Regarded by some pundits, managers, and teammates as one of the greatest midfielders of his generation. Lampard was an all-round and versatile box-to-box player who was capable of playing anywhere in midfield; throughout his career, he was deployed as a central midfielder, as an attacking midfielder, as a defensive midfielder, and even as a supporting striker on occasion.

Lampard was also capable of functioning creatively and starting attacking plays or providing assists for teammates after winning back possession due to his technique, vision, and passing range. His performance in the 2007-08 season was brilliant and played a key role in helping his team reach the Champions League Final, but he and his team returned empty-handed as they lost the final against Premier League opponent Manchester United. That night, he created eight chances, but the team was poor in front of the goal.
