Top five players Olympique Lyon should target in summer transfer window 2023
Lyon will be looking to signing players under new ownership
Olympique Lyon finished seventh last season in Ligue 1. They had a lot of uncertainty after Peter Bosz was fired, however decided to bring in former French World Cup winner as the new manager, on a 2-year deal in 2022.
With the change in ownership, there's also changes made in the backroom staff with a new football director appointed. Many talents such as Ryan Cherki, Bradley Barcola, Castello Lukeba are amongst the most coveted players in Europe. Hence planning for a future with a possibility they might leave, could leave Lyon short when the season begins. Therefore here are the players they should be looking to get in this summer.
Clinton Mata, Club Brugge
Mata, is a 30-year-old Angolan international who plays for Club Brugge. His position of a right back is an area of key reinforcement for Lyon, who need to replace Chelsea bound Malo Gusto. With an approximate 6 million euros price tag, Mata might be a realistic target to cover an important position.
Dan Axel Zagadou, Stuttgart
The Swiss international defender joined Stuttgart as a free agent last year. He had numerous suitors such as Roma, West Ham. etc interested to get his signature. His season was relatively under the radar with only 17 appearances for his club in the Bundesliga, with very little consistent game time.
This summer might be the right time to move to an environment where his experience can be used to influence the younger French U21 prospects in the Lyon team. Given that he's French, the move might be realistic with little adjustment period and his 5 million Euros price(approx) might actually be tempting to get him in the Lyon backline which needs depth.
Ludovic Blas, Nantes
The talented right winger from Nantes finished with seven goals and five assists this season with Nantes. He also contributed with Three goals and assists each in the club's maiden Europa League adventure. He's been touted as a priority signing for UCL qualified Rennes this year with a 25 million Euros price tag. However, Lyon could be well tempted to make a move and use him anywhere in the frontline to support top scorer Alexandre Lacazette.
Wilfred Zaha, Crystal Palace
The Crystal Palace legend is out of contract at the end of June at the Premier League club. The 30-year-old has played for his boyhood club for nearly a decade or so and now intends to move on. He already has a lucrative contract from Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia. Turkish club Fenerbache might also be interested in his services. However, Zaha's will to play at the top level could still be alive and a move to Lyon to help them back into European ambitions next year, with Zaha being a protoagonist.
Christian Pulisic, Chelsea
The USA international has really struggled since his move to the Premier League with Chelsea. His issues stem from constant nagging injuries which has restricted his game time with the club, which has had ample depth in the forward areas. This summer might finally be the right time to leave with Chelsea making him available for a move. Lyon's current top target could resurrect his career in France with a 25 million Euros move and joining a legacy club in Lyon can help re-establish confidence and stability in his career.
