USA announce squad for FIFA Women's World Cup 2023
The four-time champions will look to defend their crown in Australia and New Zealand
USA Women's team for the upcoming FIFA Women's World Cup 2023 has been announced. The USWNT start their campaign on the 21st of July and will look to defend their crown.
Arguably the best team in women's football have their eyes set on the fifth Women's World Cup title. They have named their 23 players' squad ahead of the final tournament.
Alex Morgan and Megan Rapinoe once again make it to the list after helping USA women to back-to-back World Cups in 2015 and 2019. Both players will be playing in their fourth Women's WC. Rapinoe won the Golden Boot and Golden Ball awards in the 2019 edition.
A total of nine players from the 2019 team make it to this year's team. Goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher will be the most experienced in front of the goal and is heading into her third World Cup.
Defender Kelley O'Hara will make her fourth World Cup appearance. Crystal Dunn and Emily Sonnett are the other two defenders with World Cup experience.
Julie Ertz, Lindsey Horan, and Rose Lavelle add some experience to their midfield. Ertz is the most experienced midfielder and is heading into her third World Cup. The other two players featured in the 2019 edition.
USWNT will be without Catarina Macario. The 23-year-old is suffering from an ACL injury and is unfortunate as she misses a chance to play in her first-ever World Cup.
The USA women's team have never finished outside the top three in eight World Cups played so far. They won the 1991, 1999, 2015, and 2019 editions. In 2011 they finished as the runner-up after losing to Germany. The 1995, 2003, and 2017 editions saw them settling for third place.
Vlatko Andonovski is their head coach and this is his first representation in the Women's World Cup. He will surely look to lift the title with the four-time champions.
