USA announce 23-man squad for CONCACAF Gold Cup 2023
United States have announced their squad for Gold Cup which set to be played in July
USA men's squad kept their pledge to have two completely separate rosters for the CONCACAF Gold Cup, only using four players to serve in two different roles for the Nations League.
On Monday afternoon, interim coach BJ Callaghan unveiled his 23-man Gold Cup squad, presenting a lineup predominately composed of players with American residences.
Several key members of the USMNT, including Christian Pulisic, Weston McKennie, and Gio Reyna, are absent from the Gold Cup squad. Folarin Balogun, a recent newcomer, won't travel with the American team to the Gold Cup either.
Instead, the participating team will have a number of players who could make their senior international cup debuts.
For this team, just five players will be splitting their time between the Gold Cup and the Nations League, which begins this coming Thursday.
That includes Alejandro "Alex" Zendejas of Club America, Miles Robinson of Atlanta United, Alan Sonora of FC Juarez, and Matt Turner and Sean Johnson of Arsenal as goalkeepers and midfielders, respectively.
As a result, during a crucial period of the MLS season, 16 of the 23 players will miss a considerable amount of playing time for their clubs.
In contrast, mainly Inter Miami goalkeeper Drake Callender, Nashville SC centre back Walker Zimmerman, previously mentioned Miles Robinson, and Sean Johnson would be absent during those four weeks if the squads were switched and the Nations League side was competing in the Gold Cup.
