Marcus Reus stepped down as Dortmund's captain earlier this summer

After serving as captain for five years, Marco Reus declared in the summer that he would hand the helm over to his replacement, leaving the decision to sporting director Sebastian Kehl and head coach Edin Terzic.

Emre Can's dependable biceps were the ones to make that decision. The former defensive midfielder for Bayern Munich, Bayer Leverkusen, Liverpool, and Juventus will turn 30 during the 2023–24 season and has grown wiser with experience.

Since joining Dortmund in 2020, he has been a consistent presence in the centre of the pitch, offering iron protection for the team's attacking powers to lead an effort that came agonisingly near claiming a first championship in 11 years this past season.

Emre Can will undoubtedly do all effort possible to help his team surpass Bayern this time and win the Bundesliga. "Emre is a born winner and someone who likes to take on responsibility," Dortmund coach Edin Terzic stated in response to the news that Can would be taking the captain's role.

Emre Can was perhaps Dortmund's most reliable player last season, and his leadership in the middle of the pitch was crucial as BVB battled for the Bundesliga championship in the second half of the year.

Can is a seasoned pro who has seen it all. He is a workhorse and doesn't appear to be hesitant to voice his views, on or off the pitch. He just extended his contract through 2026, so he will be here for a while.

The role of the team captain is largely symbolic, although some people prefer to place more importance on the choice than is necessarily warranted.

At the conclusion of the previous campaign, Marco Reus departed from his position, and a number of candidates—including Gregor Kobel, Mats Hummels, and Niklas Süle—emerged as potential successors. It seems like the club has decided what to do at this point.

He appears to be a logical option for captaining the black-and-yellows next year since, by all accounts, he is highly appreciated in the training facility.
