Niko Kovac's Dortmund made a flying start to their second-round tie at Signal Iduna Park. Serhou Guirassy [6'] finished from close range after a Julian Ryerson pass, and Carney Chukwuemeka [17'] doubled the lead after Jobe Bellingham knocked the ball down for him. It was Dortmund's earliest two-goal lead in a cup match since February 2021, and Maximilian Beier had a third ruled out for offside.

Werder fought back after the break through substitute Niclas Füllkrug. The former Dortmund striker converted a penalty [65'] after Mick Schmetgens was fouled, then levelled just three minutes later [68'], nutmegging Waldemar Anton before driving the ball home.

With extra time looming, Marcel Sabitzer [90+3'] stepped up to curl a free-kick in from the edge of the box. It was Dortmund's first direct free-kick goal since November 2024, and it sends them into the last 16.
