Lionel Messi signs contract worth $50m to $60m at Inter Miami

The Argentine will look to make his mark in the MLS

Jorge Mas, co-owner of MLS team Inter Miami, has revealed to the Spanish publication El Pais the sum that Lionel Messi will be compensated by his new club.

When Messi's contract with Paris Saint-Germain was ready to expire last month, he chose to sign with Inter Miami instead of accepting offers from his old team FC Barcelona and the Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal.

After wrapping up the European season, participating in a match for his World Cup-winning nation against Australia, and participating in two tributes at the grounds of Newell's Old Boys and Boca Juniors, the Argentine is still waiting to get his US bow.

But in the meantime, Jorge Mas has clarified Messi's acquisition and what he will gain from his move to the DRV PNK Stadium in Fort Lauderdale.

Messi's deal will earn him "involving $50 and $60 million per year," according to billionaire Mas, who runs The Herons with David Beckham and serves as the board's chairman and the biggest investor of the Miami-based engineering and construction firm MasTecMTZ +1.1%.

Messi may still be at the very top of the Forbes list among the World's Highest-Paid Athletes in 2024 with support through additional endorsements and fresh collaboration deals signed in the United States, even though Inter Miami's salary is significantly less than the rumoured €500 million ($545 million) a year offer Al-Hilal put forth.

Messi lost out to historical adversary Cristiano Ronaldo for the top position on Forbes' list in May after the latter made $136 million overall as opposed to Messi's $130 million.

However, since Messi moved to Miami, ESPN has reported that he will be paid a portion of subscription fees for MLS fans who use Apple's Live Pass when subscriptions increase as a result of his entry into the league.
