Newcastle United have one of the richest owners which makes it one of the most financially strong clubs in the world. The Premier League outfit is beginning to stretch its financial muscles gradually in order to keep in line with the FFP regulations. Before the 2023-24 season begins, the club is going to sign several top players to compete in the UEFA Champions League.

Sandro Tonali becomes the latest player to join Newcastle United. The club broke its transfer record to bring him from AC Milan. In fact, the club has been signing several players by paying a high transfer fees in recent years in order to compete with top Premier League sides.

As NUFC prepares to sign more players in the run-up to the 2023-24 campaign, here is a look at the top 10 most expensive transfers in the club’s history:

Miguel Almiron - €24.00m

Miguel Almiron signed for Newcastle United back on January 31, 2019, from Atlanta in the Major League Soccer of the USA. It cost €24.00m for the Magpies to bring the exciting attacking midfielder to the Premier League. He stands as the tenth-most expensive signing in the club’s history at the moment.

Michael Owen is one of the legends at Newcastle United. The former England international joined the club from Real Madrid on August 31, 2005. Four years later, he joined Manchester United and won his first-ever Premier League title with the Red Devils. He cost Newcastle United around €25.00m, which was a major sum back in those days. 

Joe Willock - €29.40m

Newcastle United permanently signed Joe Willock from Arsenal on August 13, 2021, after paying €29.40m in transfer fee. The midfielder has played 88 times for the Magpies. In that period, he has scored 13 goals and made six assists. 

Chris Wood - €30.00m

Chris Wood made the move from Burnley to Newcastle United on January 13, 2022, and did not stay there for a long period. The striker moved to Nottingham Forest on January 20, 2023, on loan and the move was made permanent for a €17.00m fee on 1 July 2023.

Sven Botman - €37.00m

Sven Botman was a key signing for Newcastle United ahead of the 2022-23 season as the club looked to challenge for a European spot. The centre-back signed for the Premier League outfit from LOSC Lille for a €37.00m price and is the most expensive defender in the club’s history. 

Bruno Guimaraes - €42.10m

Bruno Guimaraes joined Newcastle United on January 30, 2022, from Olympique de Lyonnais for a €42.10m fee. The attacking midfielder has quickly become a fan favourite since his arrival. Since joining the English side, Guimaraes has played 57 games for them, scoring 10 goals and providing six assists in that time. 

Joelinton - €44.00m

Joelinton was the most-expensive signing in the club’s history when he signed for a €44.00m fee. The Brazilian international signed for Newcastle United from TSG Hoffenheim on July 23, 2019. The 26-year-old has made more than 150 appearances for the club since signing.

Alexander Isak - €70.00m

Alexander Isak became Newcastle United’s most-expensive signing on August 26, 2022, when he signed from Real Sociedad for a €70.00m fee. The Swedish international has scored 10 goals and made three assists in merely 27 appearances for the club. He is young and set to play a key role in the club’s future.  

Sandro Tonali - €70.00m

Sandro Tonali is one of the acquisitions at Newcastle United ahead of the 2023-24 season and the joint-most expensive signing ever. The club paid around €70.00m for the defensive-midfielder to bring him from AC Milan in Serie A to the Premier League. The 22-year-old also becomes the most expensive Italian player of all time after the completion of the transfer.
