Mason Mount becomes the latest player to wear the iconic number at the back

Today saw the formal announcement of Mason Mount's transfer from Chelsea to Manchester United, where the midfielder will don the renowned no. 7 jersey. The squad number is renowned throughout the football community, not just among Manchester United supporters.

Given that some of the club's finest players have donned it, the number is linked to panache, talent, and game-winning brilliance.

It's a shirt laden with a lot of pressure because Mount is now anticipated to carry on the heritage of his forefathers and, in the process, turn the club into a legend.

This shirt has been present for some of the most memorable moments in football history, from George Best's brilliant abilities to David Beckham's accurate crosses, from Eric Cantona's charisma to Cristiano Ronaldo's unmatched agility. So, we look at athletes who have donned the number 7.

Since formal squad numbers were implemented in the 1993–94 period, ten players have put on the jersey preceding the midfielder, yet not all of those have proved successful.

But once the Portuguese left, a number of players failed to live up to its legendary reputation or give it credit, practically giving the impression that it was "cursed."

Ronaldo returned and claimed it back, but those are the only United players that have sported the number seven jersey.
