Goa Pro League: Injury-time drama sees Dempo SC outwit Cortalim Villagers
Dempo SC won the Goa Pro League last term.
Defending champions Dempo Sports Club scored a nervy 2-1 win over Cortalim Villagers in the Goa Professional League (Goa Pro League) at Duler Stadium Mapusa.
Though the initial 90 minutes remained barren, the match burst into life during stoppage time, witnessing an electrifying three-goal spree.
The first half was a cagey affair with both teams exhibiting defensive prowess. It wasn’t until the 35th minute that the game saw its first real attempt. Cortalim’s Velroy Carvalho’s powerful header from a set piece rattled the crossbar, leaving spectators on the edge of their seats. The ensuing rebound was swiftly cleared by a vigilant Dempo defender.
As the second half unfolded, Clive Miranda came tantalizingly close to breaking the deadlock when Denil’s precise long delivery narrowly missed its mark. It was a nerve-wracking moment for Cortalim fans, who longed for their team to take the lead.
In the dying embers of the match, Necio Fernandes tried his luck from distance, only to see his shot skimming wide of the post. Moments later, Dempo’s Richard Fernandes unleashed a powerful strike that thundered against the crossbar, sending shockwaves through the stadium. The ensuing rebound led to a corner for Dempo, but alas, it amounted to nothing.
Just when it seemed like the match might end in a goalless draw, Dempo SC orchestrated a breathtaking twist in the tale during stoppage time. Arnold Oliveira’s precise free-kick was expertly flicked into the net by the agile Pratik Naik, leaving the rival keeper with no chance to react. The jubilant Dempo faithful erupted in celebration as their team finally broke the deadlock.
But the drama didn’t stop there. In the very next minute, Necio Fernandes scored with a stunning strike from distance. Receiving a sublime pass in midfield, he coolly slotted the ball into the side netting, doubling Dempo’s lead in a matter of moments.
Nevertheless, Cortalim Villagers refused to surrender without a fight. With time ticking away, Roanil swung in a tantalizing cross from the right. In a desperate attempt to clear the danger, Sairon Albuquerque inadvertently directed the ball into his own net, providing Cortalim with a glimmer of hope. In the end, the clock ran out on Cortalim’s comeback aspirations, and the referee’s final whistle sealed Dempo’s hard-fought 2-1 victory.
