India to play Malaysia in Merdeka Cup semis

India will return to the competition after a hiatus of 22 years.

The Indian football team have been drawn against hosts Malaysia in the semi-final of the Merdeka Cup 2023 after the draw ceremony was held by FA Malaysia on Tuesday, August 8, 2023.

The match will take place at the Bukit Jalil National Stadium in Kuala Lumpur on October 13, 2023. Palestine were drawn against Lebanon in the other semi-final, which will take place earlier on the same day.

History of Merdeka Cup

The Merdeka Cup, formerly referred to as the Merdeka Tournament, constituted an esteemed international football competition hosted in Malaysia. Its genesis dates back to the year 1957, a significant epoch in the nation’s history as it marked the momentous occasion of Malaysia achieving independence from British colonial dominion on August 31.
