Odisha FC are set to make a resounding entry into the AFC Cup, as they gear up to face the formidable Mohun Bagan Super Giant in their inaugural home match at the prestigious Kalinga Stadium on September 19.
This much-anticipated clash marks the beginning of their journey in Group D of the south zone, alongside other prominent teams such as Bashundhara Kings from Bangladesh and Maziya Sports & Recreation Club from Maldives.
The teams will fiercely compete in the group stage matches, which will be held on a home-and-away basis. Securing the top position in the group will grant them a well-deserved spot in the inter-zone play-off semi-finals.
Qualification to AFC Cup
Odisha FC were granted this remarkable opportunity as a result of their exceptional performance in the Super Cup 2023, where they emerged as victors, coupled with a decisive playoff victory against none other than Gokulam Kerala FC.
Diego Mauricio, the star player for the team, exhibited an exceptional performance by scoring three goals, leading the Juggernauts to a remarkable 3-1 victory over the home team in Kozhikode.
Team under new coach Sergio Lobera
Sergio Lobera is the epitome of triumph in Indian football! With an awe-inspiring track record, he has soared to the zenith of success in the Indian Super League (ISL), clinching the league double in 2020-21.
Despite the challenges that lie ahead, Odisha FC, under the adept guidance of Sergio Lobera, aspire to achieve further victories in the coming times.
When asked about the upcoming season, the mentor said, “This year’s ISL is going to be much more competitive than last few years.”
“We are very excited about this amazing season ahead of us. We know it will be hard but we accept the challenge with enthusiasm. Hopefully, we can give our fans success and good football moments. About the player to follow, I have always believed that teams are above individuals and this year there are many very good teams,” he added.
Excitement for AFC Cup
It is evident that both the team management and the players are eagerly anticipating the opportunity to compete on such a prestigious platform. Undoubtedly, they will strive to deliver their utmost in performances, aiming to establish a notable reputation for both the club and the nation at large.
Captain Amrinder Singh has articulated his enthusiasm regarding the approaching fixture. He said, “We as a club have a chance to represent India and Odisha at the continental stage. It is a big thing for all of us at Odisha FC. The boys have been preparing well ahead of our first game. We believe that we can do something special this year and give back to our fans who have been supporting us relentlessly. See you at the Kalinga.”
Isak Vanlalruatfela also expressed his excitement by stating, “It is a great honour for the entire club to participate in the AFC Cup, representing our country. Everyone at the club is thrilled and ready to give their best. With the entire Juggernauts supporting us from the stands at Kalinga, we aim to make our debut on a high note.”
Support of Odisha Government
It is undeniable that Odisha are making commendable efforts towards fostering a conducive sports ecosystem within the state. Notably, they have established Football Training Centers in Bhubaneswar to bolster the development and promotion of the sport within the region.
When contacted for a statement regarding the support from the Odisha government, President Raj Athwal of the Club provided the following response, “The Odisha Government has been extremely supportive providing World class facilities and a sporting infrastructure to empower Odisha Football Club with the tools to become a successful Indian Super League team. It’s remarkable when head coaches visiting Odisha always comment on the high standard of the stadium and training ground facilities. We owe a huge debt of gratitude to the Odisha Government for their unwavering support. Their support has a positive impact not only for Odisha but for the rest of India.”
