Sergio Lobera's Odisha FC kickstart their football season on September 19.

Odisha FC are set to make their inaugural appearance at the AFC Cup this year, while simultaneously preparing for their fifth season in the Indian Super League (ISL). Under the guidance of the new head coach Sergio Lobera, the team is determined to enhance their performance in the upcoming season, after finishing in the sixth position in the league table during the previous ISL season.

Odisha has emerged as a notable presence in the global sports arena, diligently cultivating a vibrant sports culture within the state. The advent of Odisha FC has not only kindled the aspirations of athletes but also invigorated the hearts of fervent supporters.

Grassroot and youth development

Odisha FC are going to strategically organize a series of engaging events in educational institutions aimed at nurturing a sporting culture among the youth while simultaneously imparting valuable knowledge. Additionally, the club plans to host monthly activities that welcome participants of all age groups. These initiatives not only promote the importance of sports and fitness but also serve as platforms to educate and inspire individuals.

"We aim to organize a series of engaging events in educational institutions to raise awareness and impart knowledge about the significance of sports," stated Ravi Khedar, the Head of Business.

Inclusion of local players in the team

Developing a local team in an area where the significance of football culture has significantly diminished poses a formidable challenge. However, the management remains determined and committed to this endeavor. Efforts are underway to identify and nurture exceptionally talented players within the region. Age-specific teams have been established for players aged 13, 15, 17, and 19, with the intention of promoting the most promising individuals to the main team.

The team is not only dedicated to training the players, but they are also passionately involved in organizing various programmes to educate and empower the coaches who will be mentoring the youth.

Santosh Kashyap, the Head of Youth Development, accentuated the implementation of dedicated initiatives aimed at fostering a robust football culture and nurturing talented players in the state. He said, “These specialized programmes cater to both the youth within the specified age group and the coaching staff, thus contributing towards the development of a skilled and competitive football landscape in the future.”

Game against Mohun Bagan Super Giant

The team will commence their season with home fixtures, embarking on their AFC Cup 2023-24 campaign against Mohun Bagan Super Giant on September 19.

Coach Sergio Lobero sounded confident about the team’s clash against the formidable Mohun Bagan side. He mentioned, “I love challenges. But I want the players to first enjoy the game and the team who best manages to tackle the pressure will come out as the winner.”

When asked about the team’s performance in the upcoming ISL season, he added, “We are very excited about this amazing season ahead of us. We know it will be hard but we accept the challenge with enthusiasm. Hopefully, we can give our fans success and good football moments. About the player to follow, I have always believed that teams are above individuals and this year there are many good teams. I am sure it will be the most difficult and competitive ISL in recent years.”
