Along with ISL, Odisha FC will also be playing in the AFC Cup

Odisha FC is certainly the dark horse of Indian Super League 2023. After finishing at 6th in the league stage of last season, they have secured a place for them in the AFC Cup 2023-24 too.

Under the guidance of newly appointed coach Sergio Lobera, the team is poised to make significant strides this year, aiming for a more favorable outcome compared to the previous season. Just days before the 10th season of ISL kick starts, the Spanish tactical maestro and his players shared their thoughts in Kolkata, during the ISL Media Day.

Plans for the upcoming season

Sergio Lobera faces the challenging task of establishing himself as a frontrunner from the very outset. With seasoned players in the midst, the young talents will undoubtedly aspire to become invaluable assets for both the team and the management. This will not only contribute to the team's success in securing titles but also serve as an inspiration for budding talents in the region to embrace the sport.

When asked about the upcoming season, Sergio said, “I am pleased to be affiliated with the club, and I am eagerly anticipating the opportunity to work towards achieving success alongside them.”

Simultaneous Preparation for both ISL and AFC Cup

With the new season of ISL kick starting from 21st September 2023, Odisha FC is also going to play the AFC Cup. The first match of Odisha FC is against the formidable Mohun Bagan Super Giant on 19th of September 2023.

Preparing for both the tournaments is never an easy task for a team. When asked about it, captain Amrinder Singh said, “Undoubtedly, it poses a formidable challenge for our team and management. However, as seasoned professionals, we are more than prepared to navigate any circumstances that may arise. Our primary objective will be to maintain our physical fitness throughout this entire journey and adopt a meticulous approach, focusing on one game at a time.”

Opponents in AFC

Odisha FC is positioned in Group D of the AFC Cup, alongside esteemed teams such as Bashundhara Kings, Maziya and Mohun Bagan Super Giant. Despite the scheduled matches being spaced apart, the formidable opponents will undoubtedly pose a significant challenge for the Odisha team.

“Despite the formidable opposition that lies ahead, we are fully equipped to confront these teams, armed with a combination of seasoned players and emerging talents. Our unwavering determination ensures that we will persist until the very end” stated by Amrinder

Choice between National team and club

Representing one's country at the international level is undeniably a tremendous responsibility for athletes. While they dedicate themselves to their club endeavors, they must also uphold their duty to the nation. As Indian football steadily ascends towards success, supporters consistently anticipate commendable performances from their national team at the international stage.

“Representing the national team is a profound honor for us. We eagerly anticipate the opportunity to showcase our skills and dedication. Transitioning from club to national team poses no significant challenges for us as players. We wholeheartedly recognize the importance of our availability and commitment to both entities”, added by Amrinder.
