The anticipation is palpable as the Subroto Cup 2023 prepares to kick off in Gurugram, marking the 62nd edition of this illustrious football tournament. What began as a modest venture in 1960, exclusively featuring schools from Delhi, has now grown into a nationwide sporting extravaganza.

The visionary behind this initiative was the late Air Marshal Subroto Mukerjee, a fervent soccer enthusiast during his tenure as Chief of the Air Staff. He believed in nurturing football at its grassroots, and thus, the Subroto Mukerjee Sports Education Society was established in 1960, following his untimely demise in Tokyo.

Initially, the tournament was exclusively for Boys U-17, but it expanded to include Boys U-14 in 1998 and Girls U-17 in 2012. Today, it attracts participation from nearly 34,000 school teams across India, beginning at the state level. Moreover, its global footprint has grown, with teams from diverse countries like Brazil, Australia, the United Kingdom, and many others, lending the Subroto Cup an international prestige that transcends borders. As the tournament unfolds, it stands as a testament to the enduring spirit of sportsmanship and grassroots football development.

Format

The Subroto Cup format consists of a group stage followed by knockout rounds. Thirty-three teams are divided into eight groups, playing a round-robin format. Top two from each group advance to a 16-team knockout stage with quarterfinals, semifinals, and a final match to determine the champion.
