Top four clubs with longest unbeaten home runs in Champions League history
Two teams won the treble during these unbeaten runs.
The Champions League is one of the most competitive football tournaments in the world. European heavyweights pit against each other and every win feels like a major triumph. Given the size of the competition and the prestige of the clubs in the UEFA Champions League, winning every single game is not an easy feat. However, there have been some clubs over the last two decades that have managed to avoid defeat at home for long periods.
On that note, let’s take a look at four clubs with the longest unbeaten home runs in Champions League history.
4. Arsenal (2004-2009) – 24
Arsene Wenger’s side would compile an unbeaten record of 24 games over a four-and-a-half-year period between 2004 and 2009, beginning with a 1-0 group stage win over PSV Eindhoven at Highbury. The North London side’s record would stretch until a semi-final meeting with Manchester United almost five years later, Sir Alex Ferguson’s side putting on a masterclass at the Emirates to seal a 3-1 victory with Cristiano Ronaldo scoring twice as the holders reached a second successive final.
Arsenal would reach a final of their own during their unbeaten home run, though they slipped to defeat at the hands of Barcelona in the 2006 showpiece after a run to the final that included a Champions League record of ten successive clean sheets.
3. Manchester City (2018-2023) – 27
Manchester City have indeed not always had the most enthusiastic attitude towards the Champions League. The team did not make their debut in the competition until 2011 and they failed to get out of the group stage in their first two years when Roberto Mancini was in charge. But after Guardiola became the head coach of the city he completely changed the team and as of now they are the champions of the 2022-23 Champions League and they were unbeatable in their home for twenty-seven games over a period of five years.
2. Bayern Munich (1998-2002) – 29
One of Europe’s most iconic clubs, Bayern Munich would begin their huge 29-game unbeaten home record with a goalless draw at home to Bundesliga rivals Borussia Dortmund during a two-legged quarter-final defeat in 1997.
Bayern would not lose again in Munich for over four years, their impregnable home record helping the club to reach the Champions League final on two occasions, dramatically losing to Manchester United in 1999 before beating Valencia on penalties two years later. Their run would eventually end during the 2002-03 season.
1. Barcelona (2013-2020) – 38
The last two decades have seen Barcelona dominate European football. The Catalans have been one of the teams to watch out every season during that period. Even though at present they are struggling in European competitions, Camp Nou has never been an easy place to play for away teams. Even Manchester City have failed to break the record of Catalans as they were seen as the team who can break the record.
The Catalans were eventually beaten 3-0 by Juventus at the Nou Camp in December 2020. Cristiano Ronaldo’s twin penalties sunk the Spanish giants, who lost the top spot in their group due to that defeat.
