Hans Jörg Butt has hit Juventus with a goal from three different teams

The UEFA Champions League is the biggest football event cherished worldwide. Basically a continental competition for clubs from different countries across Europe battling to be crowned the best. This European Cup has been around from 1955-56 season and now the name UEFA Champions League is used. This change of name and branding has been in existence since the year 1992.

Many greats of the game have graced this competition. From Ronaldo Nazário to Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi to Zinedine Zidane, the list goes on. The goals scored per game are also often very high as compared to the domestic leagues across Europe. This makes the event very entertaining and an edge-of-the-seat atmosphere remains certain throughout the 90 minutes. Even though a goal is usually associated with a striker or any other outfield player, we have seen in the Champions League that even goalkeepers have the ability to find the net.

Recently Lazio keeper Ivan Provedel has joined this unusual notoriety of scoring a goal as a keeper in the UEFA Champions League. Interestingly Jörg Butt has been a nightmare for Juventus, as he has scored a goal against them each from three different German clubs he played for. Let's have a look at the list and further details:

Four goalkeepers who scored a goal in UEFA Champions League:

Hans-Jorg Butt (Hamburg vs. Juventus) - 13 September 2000

Hans-Jörg Butt started his professional career as a goalkeeper with German outfit VfB Oldenburg. The club name may be relatively unheard of as it features in the fourth tier of Germany's football spectrum. In July 1997 Hamburger SV came calling and three years later he notably scored a penalty past Juventus in the Champions League. Hamburger SV were trailing 2-3 in the 67th minute and had won a penalty. Butt stepped on the occasion and slotted the penalty in the lower left. The group stage game though ended finally at 4-4.

Hans-Jorg Butt (Bayer Leverkusen vs. Juventus) - 12 March 2002

After his first UCL goal against the Old Lady, Butt moved to the Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen in next year's summer. And just 8 months later he was the man in between the sticks for Bayer Leverkusen against Juventus in the UCL group stages of the 2001-02 season. In the 24th minute, Leverkusen went ahead after netting a penalty. And it was the goalkeeper Jörg Butt who scored it for the Die Werkself side after finding the exact same spot he did back in 2000. The second time Butt proved to be a nightmare for the Italian giants.

Hans-Jorg Butt (Bayern Munich vs. Juventus) - 8 December 2009

The third and final time Jörg Butt scored a goal in the Champions League was once again against the Bianconeri. After leaving Leverkusen to join Portugal's Benfica in 2007, Butt was offered the job at Bayern Munich just a year later. On 8 December 2009, Bayern travelled away from home to face Juventus in a Group A encounter in UCL. After Juventus went ahead in the 19th minute, Bayern wrapped up the game by scoring four to end the game at 1-4 in their favour. And it was Butt's spot kick at the half-hour mark that opened the scorecard for the German giants.

Sinan Bolat (Standard Liège vs. AZ Alkmaar) - 9 December 2009

After the world wasn't done celebrating goalkeeper Butt's goal against Juventus, a night later another goalkeeper struck the net with the Champions League match ball. In the UCL fixture of Standard Liège vs. AZ Alkmaar, the game was in the final minutes and seemed to be heading in the favour of the Dutch side Alkmaar.

Alkmaar were holding off to a solo goal from the end of the first half until the Belgium outfit won a free kick late in the game. In the 90+5 minute, Benjamin Nicaise whipped in the free kick from his right boot to meet the head of an unusual face. It was goalkeeper Sinan Bolat who had gone up the field for a chance to help out his team in the dying minutes. And so he did by scoring the late goal that helped the game to end at 1-1.

Vincent Enyeama (Hapoel Tel Aviv vs. Lyon) - 29 September 2010

In the summer of 2007, the Israel club Hapoel Tel Aviv noticed Vincent Enyeama's progress and decided to bring him in. Enyeama went on to make 157 club appearances in his four-year stay for Hapoel and later joined the French club LOSC Lille. During his time with Hapoel Tel Aviv particularly in the September of 2010 a UCL fixture saw his side lose to the French club Olympique Lyonnais. Visitors Lyon won the game by 3-1 at Bloomfield Stadium. However, the Nigerian goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama notably scored a solo goal for Hapoel Tel Aviv in the 79th minute from a penalty.

Ivan Provedel (Lazio vs. Atlético Madrid) - 19 September 2023

The Champions League was missing from the moment when a goalkeeper scored a goal in all these years after Enyeama scored. Finally 13 years after the penalty that the Nigerian keeper netted, we once again witnessed a goalkeeper taking over the show. Matchday 1 of 2023-24 UCL brought together a game between Lazio and Atlético Madrid.

The night was in the favour of Diego Simeone's Madrid after they opened the game in the 29 minute from Pablo Barrios's effort. And it seemed Los Colchoneros would return home with all three points. Lazio's goalkeeper Ivan Provedel had something different in his mind. He went into the opponent's box in added time corner kick. After the kick was taken and semi-cleared only to find a Biancocelesti shirt, Luis Alberto whipped in the ball. Surprisingly Provedel seemed to be moving like a striker and unmarked. He netted the late header goal to deny Simeone's Madrid all three points.
