Premier League title challengers welcome Championship table toppers

Leicester City, atop the EFL Championship, will face Liverpool in the EFL Cup's third round at Anfield. Liverpool hasn't played in this competition yet, while Leicester already won against Burton Albion and Tranmere Rovers, both 2-0, earning a trip to Merseyside.

Liverpool recently won three games in a row with a scoreline of 3-1. Starting with Wolverhampton Wanderers, then against LASK Linz in the Europa League, and, now, the latest being against West Ham in their last game.

But the only difference in the victory against the Hammers is that the Reds did it without trailing. Jurgen Klopp's side is second in the Premier League right now, just two points behind Manchester City.

On the other, the away side, in Leicester City is looking in solid form right now. While their last Premier League match against Liverpool was a 3-0 loss, just before their relegation in 2022-23, the Foxes under Enzo Maresca are leading the Championship with 21 points out of 24.

They had their first loss against Hull City but bounced back with wins over Southampton, Norwich City, and Bristol City. Leicester aims to avoid another early EFL CWorldup exit after Liverpool eliminated them in the quarter-finals in 2021-22.

Kick-off

Location: Anfield

Form

Liverpool (in all competitions): W-W-W-W-W-W

Leicester (in all competitions): W-W-L-W-W-W

Players to watch

Diogo Jota (Liverpool)

Although the numbers are just fine, with 2 goals in 6 league games, Diogo Jota has played a crucial role up front whenever he has been played by Jurgen Klopp. Jota has already proven his value as a super-sub against Newcastle United and in the last game against West Ham United, where he scored a goal as well. Liverpool will look to their Portuguese striker for a goal or two yet again against Leicester City.

Kiernan Drewsbury-Hall (Leicester City)

James Maddison gone, no worries! Leicester's own Kiernan Drewsbury-Hall has stepped up to fill the Madders role. KDH is on fire with 3 assists and 2 goals in just 8 games. Those following Leicester's games this season will have noticed that Drewsbury-Hall is at the heart of the midfield, orchestrating everything. There's no doubt that Enzo Maresca will hope for KDH to maintain this rhythm against Liverpool at Anfield.

Injury and team news

Jurgen Klopp's team is mostly fit, but there are still two concerns, still. Trent Alexander-Arnold has a hamstring issue, and Thiago Alcantara has a hip problem. While TAA has a chance of playing in the 3rd round, Klopp would not want to rush his return. Thiago isn't expected to be back until October.

Stefan Bajcetic missed the last game but he played well against LASK in the Europa League. Ryan Gravenberch, Caoimhin Kelleher, Jarell Quansah, and Ben Doak could also start, similar to the UEL clash.

Meanwhile, in the away camp, Leicester's team has some injuries. Dennis Praet and Tom Cannon have back problems, and Callum Doyle hurt his knee. Conor Coady is recovering from a foot injury, but they're being careful with him.

They have a strong squad and may include some familiar names in their starting lineup, like Cesare Casadei, Marc Albrighton, and Kelechi Iheanacho.

Match prediction for Liverpool vs Leicester City

While Leicester is on a roar in the EFL Championship, topping the table with 21 points out of 24, there's a reality check to come. And that is where their next opponent comes in. Liverpool are on a 6-match winning run. They have scored 2 or more goals in all of those six games. With a defence as weak as the Foxes', it could be a really easy day for the Reds' attackers at Anfield. We predict a 3-0 victory for the hosts in the EFL Cup.

Prediction: Liverpool 3 - 0 Leicester City
